As my FAWM kickoff, I submit a question... When really bad things happen to you, do you have trouble getting it out of your head?? Do you replay the event over and over?? I sure do!!

Lyrics

I Can't Forget by Gary Ray Knowland

There's things in this old world That hit me so damned hard, It's so unkind And when I turn around I'm dealt the same ole cards, and then I find My brain just won't let go It blows my mind So I just sit here thinkin about it all the time

Have you had a day When things came crumbling down, you have I know But after it was gone It swirls around your head, like falling snow Can't think of nothing else Turn on the radio, When all you really wanna do is let it go

CHORUS It seems I can't forget The bad times in my life the things that I regret The pain that's like a knife The times I was done wrong That made me so upset It hurts to not belong And still I can't forget

INSTRUMENTAL

CHORUS It seems I can't forget The bad times in my life the things that I regret The pain that's like a knife The times I was done wrong That made me so upset It hurts to not belong And still I can't forget

BRIDGE It keeps runnin like a movie reel Over and over again I can't forget the way it made me feel I wonder will it ever end

So now I'm left to ask Will bad memories fade, or will they last But only time will tell I need to let them fade, into the past Oh lord I'm so messed up You haven't helped me yet Cause so far it seems like I just can't forget

Aww, you need some closure. I think this is very relatable. I really love the cadence of the verses. Great melody and production. I really like this song, but I want you to feel better!!! Hugs friend!

As previously suggested, this has a strong Neil Young vibe. Some lovely guitar picking throughout and nice chord choices. Your vocal delivery is earnest and appealing, overall giving the song a very authentically country feel. Nice one! (And thank you for your kind words on my song, Honest To God.)

[pic]

What I replay over and over are the arguments in your head that you know you'll never have in real life with "Those People". You pinned a moment - nicely done, thanks!

Excellent backing track. Describes a bad day quite well.

[pic]

love the backing music and the way you sing this situation. you lay everything out with honesty and delicacy. the bridge works very well, taking us out and dropping us back in. there are things i cant forget, but they are mostly the bad things i have done to others (which i didnt even notice at the time) rather than the bad things done to me (which made me furious at the time)

Sehr schöner Song! Klasse Gitarren und der Vibe ist perfekt.

[pic]

really love the panning, you use it to great effect! i love the guitar playing and harmony here. great solo!!! also so relatable!! makes me think of velcro/teflon. we attach ourselves to the bad like velcro and the good can slide off like teflon.

I like the exploration of this idea. Really well done and relatable. I also always love sad songs that don't sound inherently sad and vice versa. Nice one!

[pic]

Love the carefree groove in direct opposition to the sad lyrics, but the major sevenths give depth and a contemplative vibe to reinforce the singer's pain. Your voice is perfect for this lament (I actually fought back a tear on your delivery of "Oh Lord I'm so messed up") This is such a relatable song, and I do think the best songs come from dark places! Having said that, hope you feel better!! :)

@jem

This is such a lovely juxtaposition of something most of us can relate to (those thoughts that won't stop falling like snow in our brains) and a smooth, catchy, beautiful melody. Your voice carries it so well and the instrumentation and harmonies complement the vibe of it so perfectly. I love the instrumental break and keep thinking that this is a song I'd like to sing myself. It's a keeper.

The vocal melody is super catchy, and I enjoyed the guitar playing a lot

[pic]

I love the rhythm, how it bounces. The guitar playing is tasty, and you have some cool chord voicings. Gives me Grateful Dead vibes.

[pic]

I really love that little descending guitar pattern. Excellent crisp clean guitar playing. The harmonies are a lovely add and used so well. Oh wow great instrumental section/solo. Lovely bridge! I totally relate to your song concept - except I replay the small things too honestly. Thank goodness for music and audio books to keep my thoughts quiet. I really enjoyed your song 😃

[pic]

Very relatable. I try to hold on to the funny, happy memories to balance out the feelings. You always have that smooooothe flow from start to finish, clear and concise. Nice write and performance!!

@racheleve Definitely getting that Neil Young vibe. Sounding good

@gm7

The chorus sums it up so nicely. We all have these feeling and I have had a few. It can be like a bad film in a perpetual loop which can't be interrupted. Well done

Fellow overthinker here, Gary! It's gotten MUCH better with age as I tend to let things go more. I'm glad you could turn this experience into songwriting fuel. Alchemy! Catchy chorus. Well-written song & happy FAWM!

[pic]

Such a juxtaposition of happy music and pondering thoughts. So well done here. Great story telling and what a production!

[pic]

I feel your pain! Beautifully crafted melancholic song. Being miserable never sounded so good. Music, lyrics, vocals and production all fit together so well to create a really memorable song. Love it. 😄

[pic]

Anthem for the overthinkers! Love the groove and the perfomance. And the dark lytics to a jolly tune is a very favourite device of mine :-) :-)

[pic]

This is wonderful! The backing feels like a warm hug! And YES! I sometimes struggle to let go of the "bad" things that happen. This is a perfect description of how it feels. I love it. 😄

[pic]

Great production, awesome acoustic lead! Wonderful bridge progression and thoughtful lyrics that we can al relate to: that ol movie reel - broken record playing over and over again... 😬 The past is a bitch.

[pic]

I love the darkish words over this jaunty and lovely melody. Well done! Also, the clever way it's written and phrased is just impeccable.

Came here to say this was giving me Neil Young from the time your voice came in and see others beat me to it. Just love how the chords move into an open, kinda jazzy feel in the chorus. The whole thing, including the guitar solo in the middle, sounds so good and polished. And oh boy yes can I relate to ruminating. You’ve written a very relatable and catchy one, congrats!

[pic]

Mr. Staples compared this to Neil Young, and I wholeheartedly agree. I really like the vocals, the sentiment, the guitar work, and the jazzy touch. Very pleasant listen.

[pic]

Nice song! Definitely relatable lyrics. Great guitar playing as well!

[pic]

funny this came up after reading John S inspiration for his song! Nice lyric that resonates with most of us to one degree or another! This is really a fine song! so easy to listen to - really good could slip into many a playlist!

@sbs

You must be an introvert - can’t get out of our heads - lol! Love that melody - perfect for the lyrics and your vocals. Very catchy, upbeat tune even with all that self-reflection. Nice start to my day.

[pic]

Well, I'm a leo, so I'm not supposed to be an introvert...but I must admit sometimes I am!!

[pic]

Wow, Gary! Like HUGE frickin'! WOW! I love, Love, LOVE this so much. My immediate thought was your vocals and those chords sound like they could have been from a recently discovered track from Neil Young's Harvest album!!! I just LOVE this so much! Such a melancholy melody and lyrics but it also manages to delight me through and through! Thoughtful, poignant words that really reach down into my heart. Dang I can relate to this!

You are off to a fantastic start, my friend!!! I will play this for Rose later today after we get some sleep and share her comments with you here. She is gonna love this!

Thank you, Gary - This was exactly the first FAWM song I needed to hear. Did you ever have one of those days when the furnace died in your empty house and the bathroom faucets exploded? I'll be humming this while we mop up the mess. I like the way the chorus takes me from the physical messes like fire, flood, rust, and thieves into the emotional pain caused and suffered. So glad you're back.
