Last year I picked up the "Hitmaker" expansion for Superior Drummer 3. It contains many of Hugh Padgham's signature sounds, including that sound he discovered through a heavily compressed, ball and biscuit talkback mic while producing Phil Collins. So I thought I'd have a play to see just how close it gets. As it turns out, it's pretty spot-on. So I had to use it, didn't I? Hugh seems a nice chap; I'm sure he won't mind...

There is no escaping from it Like some prog rock dinosaur I can't quite put my finger on it But I think I've heard that sound before

It's just a given That pounding rhythm You will end up its slave But when the beat Wants me to cheat I'm going to misbehave

That drum machine Will keep things clean (if strangely artificial) Who would have thought that what it wrought Would be so beneficial?
