Sunlight Over You

Liner Notes

Draft 6 of September 2026 Song Sprint

This is one of the (44 remaining) 51 lyrical drafts I had left over after July's 5/9. I will try to complete a few more of those here before our time runs out.

Skirmish prompt: “fold.” I was going to write a song about a burrito, but then I didn’t (and then later I did, but that’s not this song).

Instrument: tenor ukulele, low GCEA tuning #ukulele #uke #girlwithukulele #personwithukulele #sunlight #acousticonetake #fuc #temporalshifts #wistful #americanasati

Lyrics

First you have to go down To the corner, see what flavor You were born into this time I was writing in my diary All about the day we met How we stumbled through the sprinkler To get “accidentally” wet

I’d fold water I’d fold time I’d fold sunlight over you Like safety, make it stronger Wait…a little longer Wishing for your wishing to come true

When the dogs start to bark They can smell it, starts and endings It goes better if you do not lie to them On the wall inside my closet Wrote our names in script and Sharpie So they’d know where we had been

BRIDGE I could spend a hundred days like this And want a hundred more You let me hide your shoes You let me lock the door

I’d fold water I’d fold time I’d fold sunlight over you Like safety, make it stronger Wait…a little longer Wishing for your wishing to come true

I’d fold water I’d fold time I’d fold sunlight over you

Wishing for your wishing to come true

I like the whole thing -- pleasant and relaxing -- but was really caught by: "You let me hide your shoes You let me lock the door" That's like an entire story (or lifetime) in two lines. Wonderful!

Thank you! I'm glad you mentioned their lines -- their subtext is really key to my understanding of this lyric. I'm moved to see your comment.

You melodious vocals carry well this heartfelt write in song, @newukenewyork ! Love the lines: "I'd fold water/I'd fold time/I'd fold sunlight over you." Golden! Nice name touch, too, with that Sharpie connection and sprinkler frolic. Classic moments captured and translated so well in those. Cool write, memorable song. Dug that you underplayed it in vocal expression, rather than full-on. How much more meaningful it played through that reflective tone and delivery.

Thanks very much for your thoughtful thoughts! 😄

Beautiful melody, well sung. And a diminished chord in the bridge (if I heard it right)? Nice surprise for the ears!

Thanks so much! I think maybe you mean the Bbm6, which is one I don’t use much but always like the sound of.

Such lovely poetic lyrics that draw me right in to the emotion. I love the flow of the melody and gorgeous vocal leaps that ring out so clear. I really love the warmth in the chorus.

Thank you so much. I get uncomfy with the sound of my voice but it was a pleasure to DO the singing here. I liked the melody “from the inside.”

@val

Starts really strong with a very interesting lyric. The lyrics are just really poetic. I love the specific examples you give to make the emotion grow and really develop the characters. I wish I could write like that. Such a pretty tune too. Lovely vocals. Wish I could hit notes that clear and pure too. Beautiful.

Thank you very much! I vacillate between wanting to sing some higher notes and feeling more comfy low. I’m glad you didn’t mind the melody.
