notes was listening to my weekly gospel show on the radio and a song came home about how the devil sometimes comes as a man of peace, and i loved that idea. tried to write a duet from that idea, but ended up with just a bridge perspective shift. my wife helped come up with the refrain hook because i asked her what the devil would sing on his part, what would he lie about, and she simply said "why would the devil need to lie".

Lyrics

[c2] f a you know he's gonna come back soon spouting the smoothest of words on the tv looking spotless and clean wearing his crown of peace

2x [refrain] d cmaj a why would the devil need to lie

magazine showing harder times standing in a grocery line worrying bout those money woes bill higher than a mountain breeze

2x [refrain]

preaching man wearing that gucci suit telling you what to tithe now he's on the story reel got you shouting at the tv screen

2x [refrain]

bdim f gm e if you would all just slow down and listen to what i say

we could all leave together in harmonious way

lions leading the slaughter on the way to a better day

gm a e why would i have to lie

the world in the palm of his hand hate and war amongst the land curse and moan as we gnash our teeth is this a living hell?

2x [refrain] why would the devil lie

My kids liked the show The Good Place for a while. This could be a song from one of the episodes. It’s such a good line. Kudos to your wife. All kinds of questions about means and ends and God and Caesar floating around while I listen. I love how you inhabit the certainty of the two characters. The warning prophet and the smooth talking devil himself.

Why indeed, and such an interesting question to ponder. The dissonance in the chord changes really highlights the shifts in the lyric. I think you're onto something here.

The lyrics make you sit up and take notice. The simple melody and the chords add to the question you're asking in every refrain. "Lions leading the slaughter on the way to a better day" - brr. That's the truth, isn't it?
