This is very much #filk for the #LARP I'll be attending - it tells the story of the cryoship headed out to find a new home, from the perspective of someone who really probably doesn't have what it takes to get on the crew roster.

A #singalong that should be fun for the other players. I sure had fun with it.

Lyrics

Save A Spot For Me Jemma Kline

Well, I read the morning paper and the radiation’s high. They say if I go out in it that I will surely die. But I heard that you are flying to a new home in the sky, So I really hope you’ll save a spot for me.

I will buy myself a ticket with the bottle caps I’ve saved, Or perhaps a cask of mushroom wine I’m growing in my cave, For I’ve gotten sick and tired of just staying home all day, So I really hope you’ll save a spot for me.

Now cryochamber tubes won’t give you very much to do, But when we wake up for our shift I’ll sing a song to you, And I figure in the icebox there is room for one more cube, So I really hope you’ll save a spot for me.

When we reach our destination I will meet you on the ground, Though I don’t know how to dig a field or mend a fence that’s down. But I’m good at telling stories and you’ll never see me frown, So I really hope you’ll save a spot for me.

I am sure the crew you’ve picked is very brave and smart and strong, And they’ve never in their perfect lives made choices that were wrong, But you’ll have my bottle caps and mushrooms and my silly songs, So I really hope you’ll save a spot for me. Yes I really hope you’ll save a spot for me.

Every society needs story-tellers! And music. I would save you a spot. You could learn to dig faster than those perfect folk could learn to tell good stories.

That was fun. It's a very clear story and character sketch. As a listener, I'm walking a line between sympathy and amusement, which keeps me involved to see if the song tips me one way or the other.

Love the premise! And fun to listen to. I remember an SF novel relating to your plot - the protagonist was a bit of an anti-hero but he found a way to wrangle on to the colony ship. It was otherwise highly selective, but he had a mission. Now that I think of it, I think he was some kind of artist-historian who meant to capture history in song for them too. "And they’ve never in their perfect lives made choices that were wrong," is a deep observation.
