Like Summer
Liner Notes
Draft 4 of September 2026 Song Sprint
This is one of the (46 remaining) 51 lyrical drafts I had left over after July's 5/9. I will try to complete a few more of those here before our time runs out.
“I’ll stay” is a lie you sometimes want to hear.
I did some improvisation with melody here and made up the solo section chords on the spot. I’m sure it will keep changing.
Original Liner Notes: I didn’t know where I was going with this — I just wrote to the “summer lovin’” skirmish prompt and ended up here — uneven line lengths and varying rhyme might need revision but then again, maybe not. It’s a vibe.
Instrument: baritone ukulele, low DGBE tuning #ukulele #uke #girlwithukulele #personwithukulele #summer #Americanasati #midemfoke #acousticonetake #fuc #baritoneuke #baritoneukulele
Lyrics
It’s too hot for the hot tub And I am bruised grass Bury me under a spread of shade Tell me like summer, you’ll stay
Touch me cool, be cellar floors Sit on the low stone wall Find the soft dip There used to be streams here Ice to the top of the glass, learn how to sip
In the garage, a rock tumbler spins Insisting loud I hear a hum Cicadas are calling and calling for someone My chalky hands under the hose-warm spill And I am wondering wondering When you will come
Come in, let the screen door slam Shout to me that you are home Let the sweat dry down Be the flat slab sky Be the one white cloud Be the fan that goes around
(Brief Instrumental)
It’s too hot for the hot tub And I am bruised grass Bury me under a spread of shade Tell me like summer, you’ll stay

Thanks for this. I really like those lines, too. And I love playing with sorrow. <3
I'm enjoying the slow groove, and a very pretty melody. I like your gentle vibrato on the held notes. I love the personification of all of the summer things, this is a really good lyric.
Thank you so much! I've done several upbeat songs recently, so I'm glad it worked to change the pace.
Beautiful song (and the performance, oh the performance!) that really paints some pictures. Very enjoyable indeed!
Thank you very much; I appreciate it! :)
A wonderful register for your voice (which always lands right), and the vibrato is wonderful. Always a pleasure.
Thank you so much for the kind words.
Great performance of a well written and crafted tune (as per usual) you never disappoint!
Many thanks for the kind words!
Those two opening chords are really sweet and fit so achingly well together.
"And I am bruised grass" really gets me choked up, unexpectedly.
The specificity of the details really puts the ache of this song on the body and lets it dig in. Whew. So nice.
This song is really beautiful. Thank you for this.
Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment. I’m honored that it evoked feelings for you.
You have a pretty voice. Very poetic words. I like the contrast between the first two verses.
Thank you! I really appreciate seeing your response to the song.
Beautiful song, singing, playing and video. I'm not sure I heard such emotional song from you before. I'm used to your happy songs but I feel I prefer this song. It resonates with me more. It really drew me in from the very start and kept my attention and involvement. Beautiful work!
Thank you! 🙏🏼 I write a lot of sad songs but maybe not for FAWM.
Impressive that you did 50 during July. I like this one, with the beautiful emotional waves of voice. You have so many "summerisms" here. I've always liked the light of summer, but I don't like the heat. BTW, I just captured someone's recording of a cicada which I want to slow down.
Thank you very much for sharing your reaction — I love the idea of a slowed down cicada sound being used in a song.
So many interesting lines in this, such sharp little details. My faves:
You have given this such beautifully sad music! The long vocal lines are so emotionally effective and so pretty. Love these chords. This song fills me with longing. You knocked this one out of the park as well!
