Jane Brideson is an Irish artist who specializes in painting The Cailleach in all her many forms, guises and symbols. She painted an oracle deck that I ordered from her early on in 2020 and I have used it ever since. As part of my first FAWM, I wrote songs for some of the cards, and this is one. The Home card shows a little Irish cottage, snuggled up in the landscape under vast heavy skies dark with rain. Yet, the lights glow at the windows, cheery and warm, and the door is cracked just enough to signal that you too are welcome.

I've had to redefine what home is to me. That was hard. I'm still working at it, but I feel like I've made a good start with this song.

I tried very hard to get this to have more than two layers of harmonies, but it would not do it today. Ah well. There is something very nostalgic and old-timey about a duet.

Lyrics

The door is always open For going out or coming in Welcome in, sit down and center, Slough off bits of where you've been

You're here now Safe and sound You're here now Safe and sound

The hearth is always glowing Filled with warmth and love and hope Loose yourself in well-told stories In the voices that you know

You're here now Safe and sound You're here now Safe and sound

The windows shine with candles Casting light into the dark They will guide you on your travels Guide you homeward towards your heart

You're here now Safe and sound You're here now Safe and sound

True confession - I feel I need lots of instruments in my arrangement to take attention off my voice. Here, however, the purity and strength of your voice work perfectly. It sounds like it would fit in well with the Celtic ballad tradition.

I'm honored and very pleased that this fits the Celtic ballad tradition, as that is the feel I was aiming for. Thank you!

Very nice. I like the clarity of enunciation that survives a lovely harmony mix.

This is really lovely and does feel very homey! And it has a very traditional feel to it.
