Liner Notes

Here's a song influenced by Traditional Ballad structure.

Lyrics

Snake in the Grass

INTRO: (Bb) (C) (Dm)

(Dm) We had a hippy commune, Way (Bb) back in (C) sixty (Dm) nine What's yours and what is mine We (C) never could de(Dm)fine We gave what we could give I (C) furnished the lion's (Dm) share To join in our community You (Bb) just need(C)ed long (Dm) hair

Jack Trent drifted in from Frisco Full of character and charm He bowled over the chicks All opposition he'd disarm A handsome guy to boot He seemed to score the most But Jack was a mere parasite And we were just the hosts

He'd never lift a finger If work was in demand He'd go off to rehearsals With his hackneyed band They were going to hit the big time He'd share it with us all Whoever believed that hogwash Was heading for a fall

I warned the group we'd invited in A real snake in the grass I proposed that we should throw him Right out on his ass But he'd worked his way into their hearts He was the King of Spades And most were taken in by Jack's obvious charades

He said he was a dealer But a pusher was more his style He introduced some heroin Which really got me riled The atmosphere was changing The vibes were not so good And Trent was taking everyone For whatever he could

The day the pigs came knocking Our safe had disappeared We were all arrested An event I had long feared Some chicks were quietly weeping Now they'd lost their real Don Juan As we signed our forced confessions Jack Trent was a long way gone

But sadly no-one would believe My credible argument They guy who'd shopped us to the fuzz Was that parasite Jack Trent

So much story and truth lacked into a skirmish song! I am watching a loved one fall for a cult leader right thus week.

Enjoyed this! Your vocal is just terrific, and love the uke and esp. the dash of recorder. You've captured the troubadour feel/sound and told a tie-dyed tale of betrayal among some not-so-groovy hippies. This is really a lot of fun!

Hi people. Just a note to say I have posted the demo of my submission for the Parasite Skirmish called "Snake in the Grass"

I enjoyed reading the story. Look forward to hearing it.

What I like about this is that you've really turned a dramatic monologue into a song -- there's a whole cast of characters, scenes, conflict, crisis, and ending. And even the personality of the singer comes through clearly. Really interesting approach!

Wow, Bernie you've conjured a world in this skirmish. You do so well at capturing the reality of communal living - all peace and love until the sharks start circling. It's so hard to preserve such things
