Liner Notes

Since I'm a songwriter, of course there's a vocal and a drum loop. Other than that, all instruments are in the bassment. This short piece with just one verse and chorus uses my 1969 Precision bass along with a double bass, bass clarinet, contrabassoon and two cellos.

Picture this as a parent speaking to an offspring who's heading out into the world as a fledgling adult.

Lyrics

If worse comes to worst And your fortune's reversed You're always welcome here Take the chances you need Don't follow, always lead And live completely without fear

Come back to home base It's still your own place You'll be loved when you come through the door Come back to home base

@exc3

I love this cord progression.

Paul's bass for the win! If you want extra credit, you could add in a Billy Bass, though I don't know how 42 seconds of Take Me to the River would mesh with what you have. (BTW, I do think this is amazing, and I appreciate the sentiment as expressed by others here.)

Aw, thanks, Eugene! I did it for the We Write Songs February challenge which involved creating a song with limitations. I decided to limit myself to the bass clef.

Missed you at yesterday's Song Refinery. I brought a FAWM song that I think would match your love of humour and whimsey. Check out I am a Dog! here https://fawm.org/songs/324178

Nice one @paul_pedersen Sorry to dethrone you with my last song that came in at 40 sec. Though you could take that as a challenge if you'd like to! haaa

Careful! I'm a sore loser. I added a comment to the thread on your winning 40 second tune.

That totally works. I’ve been so impressed with the allaboutthebass songs that I’ve heard. Do you actually have all of those bass instruments and the know how to play them? Very cool…Wonderful sentiment to your lyrics.

Thanks for listening to the shortest song on FAWM. The only actual instrument that I played was the Precision bass. It provided the highest notes. As I recall, the drums were from EZ Drummer 3. Everything else is played on a midi keyboard using instruments from the Diamond Symphony Orchestra, a Kirk Hunter Kontakt virtual instrument with everything that you would find in an orchestra. When I bought it, Hunter was thinking of winding up his business and the software was at a ridiculously low price. For some reason, the company decided to stay open and everything is back to normal pricing.....which I could not afford. You can look it over here: https://www.kirkhunterstudios.com/products/diamond-symphony-orchestra/

Very short! It is a great thing for a kid to have a "home base" - something that as adults we dont realize until the option doesnt remain any more. I think this was heartfelt. I must admit my expectations when I read the title was that the home base was being advertised as a lust-fueled destination rather than something safe to return to! Perhaps you could have another 40 second song exploring that angle, add one more and you have another mico-opera! Enjoyed your song Paul, thanks for sharing it

Thanks Andrew. This was done for a challenge by my main songwriting group, We Write Songs. The challenge was to impose limitations on yourself and see what you can create. One person did a two-chord song. Since I seldom use less than five, I chose to limit the instrumentation to the bass section.

I expect that I will revisit the song post-FAWM, strip back the bass to a regular amount and create a couple more verses. The guitar part was done first for the recording you heard but muted to satisfy the bass instrumentation for the challenge.

I think this is the shortest song I've ever commented on in my 20 years of doing FAWM, but you make it work. That message is so beautiful and nurturing. I love how you used so many bass instruments and then went with the play on it with Home Bass. Nice job…and I’m really not missing any other instruments. You make it work.

Thanks Todd. At some point I may expand the lyrics, add the guitar back in (already recorded) and trim down the bass parts. I'll also admit that it's probably the shortest piece I've ever done.
