The Work

Liner Notes

Everyone says, "show up and DO THE WORK and you'll get what you're after." But sometimes it doesn't feel like the work you do is getting you anywhere.

The music video is found footage from the Prelinger Archives How To Study

Lyrics

I put a paperclip In a jar Every time I send you a card

If you write Like you promised to One gets pulled It's still full

I'm not getting something right

But I'm putting in the work Showing up on time and reading the books None of it is doing me any good There's no use But I'm putting in the work

You said you wanted this From me And I try And I try

I'm not getting anywhere

But I'm putting in the work Showing up on time and reading the books None of it is doing me any good There's no use But I'm putting in the work

I'm not getting something right

But I'm putting in the work Showing up on time and reading the books None of it is doing me any good There's no use But I'm putting in the work

there are some tasty chord changes in here. i think the acoustic stripped down nature of this demo actually suits the vibe of the song really well, if you decide to flesh this out i might not stray too far from where it is now (just some pads and accents, like a rubin-era johnny cash thing). really nice work!

Nice cheerful feel, but with lyrics about frustration and disappointment, always a good way to deliver a lyric that imparts those sentiments! For me the lyrics are a bit reminiscent of something by Elvis Costello (maybe "Every Day I Write the Book"), but your approach is a more minimal, less wordy, which I like. Well delivered and thought out!
