Liner Notes

#lyricsonly at this point, and I am very open to a musical collaborator to set this to music. I started writing about Olympians whose had social and psychological issues after winning, but that didn't feel right. Then I remembered Bullet Bob ('64 Olympics, recruited by the Dallas Cowboys on the basis of his speed, and is the only NFL player with an Olympic medal (I'm told - need to verify!) He had an awesome post-Olympic career, and yet is now forgotten. It took a long time for him to get into the Hall of Fame in Canton. Anyway, the song morphed into a valedictory speech to medal winners with the hope they'll glitter even past the gold.

Lyrics

Glitter Past the Gold (c) 2026 raspberry33

(verse) Congratulations are in order to those who win gold Right now, right here, you are the champs whose stories will be told But how long will folks remember The day you were the best Shining moment now a memory May your future be blessed

(Chorus) Gold, nice to hold, but grows cold over time Faces replaced, culture turns on a dime Blame it on fame wanting this season’s clothes You’re a star right now, glittering But will you glitter past the gold?

(Verse 2) His name has vanished from the headlines, like Texas tumbleweed The athlete with both SuperBowl ring and Olympic metal speed Eleven seasons with the Cowboys; they called him Bullet Bob Till his football days were over, and the world moved on.

CHORUS

instrumental verse

Bridge: Some famous people have been well-advised But far too many were not anchored well Some have to wander even though they’re not lost And shiny things may line the road to hell

(Verse) It’s not just athletes who are dealt a golden hand to play To find that it’s been tarnished by the troubles of the day Insane success, and riches, and now rules do not apply If you’re not well grounded, stop reaching for the sky

(Chorus)

(Outro) Can you glitter past the gold? Take it to the next level Glitter past the gold? Pay no attention to the devil Glitter past the gold Glitter past the gold Even if like Bullet Bob – no one remembers

Love this! Its so true now when I talk to people about a guy I grew up playing hockey with who won gold in ice dance. Him and his partner were in the headlines for years but now only fans of that sport recognize his name. The glitter fades and this captures it well. 💯 💛

Interesting take on the prompt. Great idea relating it to Gold Medals and the fleetingness of fame. Very apt as we've just had the Winter Olympics.

I think you've packed a lot in here and some good observations as well about the fleeting nature of fame and celebrity. Good write for the skirmish
