Liner Notes

cheslain: I got paired with @lyricslinger in the Random Collaborations challenge. We've written a song together before some years ago and now was the perfect opportunity to do another one. His lyrics were inspired by the ghost tours they have in Edinburgh and coincidentally I've been on one of those tours about 15 years ago and these words brought me back there and in addition made me reminisce about the lovely week I spent in Scotland.

Musically this is synth pop with a bit of an 80's feel, I suppose. Drum machines, synths and a little bit of electric guitar. Word of warning: if you're lactose intolerant, the guitar solo towards the end is so cheesy it might cause a reaction.

Simon: Brilliant to get to do another song with @cheslain , and I'm beyond delighted at how this one turned out.

Lyrics

Echoes Carried In The Wind

(Verse 1) Have ye heard the drums under the cobblestones Though there's no drummer standing there? Have ye seen the serving boy upon the spit Maybe felt his chill in the air?

(Verse 2) Would you brave the vaults where echoes moan With the loss and despair of the plague? Have ye seen wee Annie of Mary King's Close Did your heart not splinter with her ache?

(Chorus) Ghosts are echoes carried in the wind Anchored deep down through true pain You try to laugh and lift your spirits up But you sink, weighed down with iron chains

(Bridge) Annie's spirit longs for the pretty dolls She used to play with while she still drew breath You could smell the stench from the old Nor Loch But life was life until the Black Death

(Chorus) Ghosts are echoes carried in the wind Anchored deep down through true pain You try to smile and lift your spirits up But you sink, weighed down with iron chains

(Chorus) Ghosts are echoes carried in the wind Anchored deep down through true pain You try to laugh and lift your spirits up But you sink, weighed down with iron chains

I agree that this paring is inspired! These lyrics are so well crafted and the music and vocals bring this macabre tale to life with a chill. Well done to the both of you. I thouroughly enjoyed this listen. Great collaboration. Love that guitar cheese as well.

well that was inspired pairing then :-) yup very well captured in delivery the feeling from the lyric. very fine chorus - juts spooky enough!

Yeah, can't have been many others on the whole site who had also been on one of those Edinburgh ghost tours!

Spooky and driving beat and sound. Totally cool lead guitar, direct from the 80s! I'd like to have even more verses from Simon!

I really liked the death echo. This collaboration is wonderful! Impressive

I must admit that 80s pop is the least genre I expected Cheslain to try. However this is a great match for the lyrics that are well phrased. Im lactose intolerant but old cheese doesn't cause a problem. Guess your guitar solo goes into this direction...

From a scan of the lyrics, I would never have guessed this would be an 80s synth banger! But it very much is! Super well done both. Just perfect construction and I agree about the bridge being a great choice too.

You nail the 80s vibe! Really cool spooky mood. The chorus is a surprise kicking this moody ghost story into a high gear. The almost spoken word style bridge is a showstopping moment. I like the thought of ghost being just echoes.
