Nonsense

Liner Notes
This is another song that wasn't finished. I started it last summer and really thought it had potential. So, tonight I loaded it up and completely changed all of the instrument tracks. I also spent a lot of time trying to give it some dynamics that it was lacking before. In the draft version I felt my vocals were subdued in the mix but this time around I've tried to lower the volume of the guitars, drums and synths when the vocals are active. I had been focusing on making the vocals louder or more fx-heavy. But upon changing my focus to lowering non-vocals I got the levels where I wanted them fairly quickly.
In the lyrics I am imagining a fellow who is "drifting" in and out. And just when he sees a light at the end of the tunnel he seems to drift again. But he seems to be learning to enjoy where he is at! At least that's how I see it. Who knows? I mean, it was only later on that we found out the walrus was Paul!
I am really loving this song now!!!

fierce purple chickens chased the astronaut snakes out of my yard I try to keep on livin' but everything is gettin' really hard
strange orange beavers consumed the wooden soldiers on my street I'm sittin' here starvin' fridge is full but there's nothin' left to eat
nonsense makes more sense than this up is down in is out everything is nothing I'm facin' The Abyss
tie-dyed opossums launched a green-eyed hip-hop cult inside my shed strange things are happenin' outside even more inside my head
nonsense makes more sense than this up is down in is out everything is nothing I'm feelin' The Abyss
things will get better you say it with a smile but I really don't believe you you rainbow crocodile
nonsense makes more sense than this up is down in is out everything is nothing I'm lovin' The Abyss

John! The lyrics are so fantastic and I am currently listening in the car (not driving, passenger princess)… dude… this mix is so freaking good! I loved every part of listening to this, especially “tie-dyed opossums launched a green-eyed hip-hop cult inside my shed” Nonsense makes more sense indeed.
Thank You Abby!!! I really do love this one!!
I love the sound of the guitar with the synths — they just blend and play off each other so well. Lyrically, you really grabbed me with the rainbow crocodile lines. “Rainbow crocodile” should have a song of its own.
Awesome sauce!! This song is so damned great I'm having trouble figuring out what to say.. I figured if I just type a bunch of nonsense, it might very well be appropriate, but I can't compete with strange orange beavers chewing up wooden soldiers!! Dam them!! The lyrics instantly reminded me of CCR's looking out my back door!! (my fav CCR song!). The synth bass and keyboards are perfect and the vocal treatment is spot-on for the dreamy, nightmarey lyrics. And as much as I loved those lyrics, I loved the melody of the song and your delivery even more. Awesome vocals and the harmonies are just excellent. The chorus is out-of-the-park awesome!!! Ridiculously awesome!! The musical track is so non-typical for you, but it is so frikkin good!! It's instantly memorable...sticks in my head...delights my musical senses!! This song ranks up there with my all-time favorite JS songs... (admittedly a long list!). Ultra creative and wonderfully fanciful. I LOVE THIS SONG!!! How could anyone not??? You are on fire!!
the arrangement is busy but never gets in the way of the vocals. and those lyrics! you cant go wrong with those opening lines. and each verse begins with lines just as vividly nonsensical. musically this is a change of pace for you that i am truly enjoying. it is still solidly staples even as it pushes the perameters of style.
well this was not what I was expecting when clicking on a John Staples song - but im here for it! love the meldoic 80's bass - and the lyrics!! I have no idea whats going on but i want to know why the purple chickens are so fierce and why they feel they need to chase the astronaut snakes (and how to snakes manage to function in space when they have no appendages and its zero gravity!) I also love that tie dyed opossums are hip hop cultists! so much to unwrap in this - great job John
Tie dyed opossums! Oh my. I'll have to get my local wildlife to upgrade their wardrobes. Love the bouncy synth bass and when the guitar kicks in.... Oooooh good.
What a belter of a first line!! Such inventive and frankly hilarious imagery. I might steal Astronaut Snakes or Tie-Dyed Opposums as a band name 😂. The mix sounds pretty darn great to me. Nice choice to use the synth bass and more electronic drums, gives it that real trippy vibe. The harmonies sound awesome, as does your main vocal, and the little guitar outro is super cool. Really enjoyed this one, John!
very fun lyric , did Ray get a mention! like a dream that makes sense at the time then doesn't! Good instrumentation and delivery as usual!
I love these quirky lyrics and the instrumentation gives it a very special sitting vibe. Well done
I love it! That first line snagged me hard. What a cool, catchy, fever-dream of a song. The rat-a-tat-tat of the drum machine really leans into the surreal atmosphere. But despite the distinct weirdness, it's melodically fantastic!
I want to know how you came up with some of those images. For real; fierce purple chickens chasing space-faring snakes? Polychrome cult-founding opossums?!
Thank you Casey! I honestly love it for its nonsense and self-awareness of its nonsense! As for the images, I sure do enjoy word salad!
Hello? Is this 1-800-nonsense?
I'd like to order a dozen rainbow crocodiles and four tie-dyed opossums, please. What's the charge for expedited delivery on the crocs? By noon on Tuesday you say? Yeah, that would be great. Can you bill it to my Neighborhood Watch? We're setting up 24-hour pawtrols. Sure, I'll take a survey after you complete my order.
Really a fun song!
