The Divorce

Liner Notes
This was a hard one to write, even after fifty odd years. Again, part of the Song Cycle, probably the end of the first half. Musically, I tried to come up with a variation of the Paul Stookey "Wedding Song" for irony's sake and didn't quite get there but I like what I came up with. #songcycle #threeofus
Lyrics
They never should have married They didn't get along well Still, they were our parents Right or wrong
The news came from my father Almost 20 years to the day When they married in New York City We still have wedding pictures
The last six years, back and forth Dad was sometimes home and sometimes not When he asked for the divorce Dad was living in Puerto Rico
My mother took it well It was not unexpected Dad went his way, she went hers Mom got alimony payments
Dad was out of contact for awhile I found him 10 years later Called the phone number I discovered Heard, "Your Dad has no son."
Dad was on the phone two minutes later Addressed me as he always did "You motha, how did you find me?" Sorry, Dad, I'm here.

Mike, this brought me to tears. I know that’s a cliche but it really did. Your guitar is perfect, the tone is so clear, and your voice is mesmerizing. What a beautiful, bittersweet song. Strong, meaningful lyrics, with no frills. Just real. Lovely. Really special. Thank you for sharing
Great complement, thank you so much, Nanci!
Wow, this is such heartbreaking storytelling. That last verse hit me in the gut. Nice write.
