Liner Notes

I recently acquired a Software Version of a keyboard I lusted after in the 1980s, but could never afford - the CASIO CZ 100.

I was playing around with it this evening and still couldn't figure out how to get Ableton to recognise it. So no DAWS were harmed in this recording.

I thought it might be fun to try the F & Am only challenge so I started using a complex evolving sound alternating between F and Am. I then added a synth strings sound to underpin that. Of course with no DAW to edit the notes, the sync wasn't always that great., but listening back that seemed to add a more "outer space" feel to the track.

Taking a break I looked to see what the Skirmish Prompt was. When I saw it I knew instantly what I needed to do.

So I came up with these lyrics, which are spoken by an alien archaeologist visiting the Earth some centuries from now. The Babel Fish kindly translated his bleeps and blurps (the original is the synth sound) into a proximity of 21st Century English - though it sounds more Victorian to me - but who's arguing?

Instrument: Arturia CZ-1 Soft Synth

Lyrics

NOTE: As we join the Archaeologist he is examining the skeleton of a long dead human

It's a most important trait Look closely there's a bipedal gait The opposable thumb is also a clue It's distinctly human I believe that is true

This species went extinct an era ago Not much intelligence did they show They exhausted their resources in their greed Putting before any logic their wants and their needs

A planet's resources are limited, didn't they know? They used up everything that nature bestowed The consequences were catastrophic, I would state The climate changed and they couldn't cultivate

Without their food starvation wiped them out That is what must have happened, I've no doubt They took many species with them when they died Ah, yet another race that committed planeticide!

Oh wow, these synth sounds are amazing, I have that Arturia pack but I don't think I've ever used that one, clearly I need to. And I love this narration. yeah we humans are better at making art about our doom than we are at changing our trajectory it seems. But at least we have that!

Glad you like the song. The CZ series were such unique synths. I lusted after one back then, but by the time I could afford one they were no longer made.

Takes an alien to tell us what we should already know. But we are pretty good at providing background music to their warnings.

I second that this is a very creative take on the skirmish. Really well laid out in both words and music. Well done

Very creative take. Fascinating to listen to. Spacey and adventurous. 2 challenges in 1. Great work, Love your choice of instruments and recital.

Ooooo love the spacey vibes!! And especially the ending "yet another race that committed planeticide!" I don't think I've heard that word before, it's quite good <3 (and terrifying)

I think I may have just coined that word. But the Babel Fish in my ear should take the credit, it was only translating what the alien said. 😈

NOPE - just checked Google it exists. Darn it!

kind of reminds me of Tom Waits "What's he building in there". Very cool!

Love the concept for this. The synth makes me think of Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Great stuff

Yes, that struck me too. Spacy synths were a constant background sound in HHGTTG

I also couldn't have understood a word the alien said without my Babel Fish in my ear. 😉
