15. Out Of Step

My partner, my best friend, is a dancer who hates to dance. I guess it's not crazy, I'm a singer who hates to sing. She danced all her life and yet she's still awkward when it's just her and I, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
The song is not in a super strange time signature, but seeing as I was writing love songs for my partner to enjoy, this will be the "wildest" structured song with the verses being three bars of 6/4 and the final one 4/4. I did write a love song in 5/4 for my first FAWM, but honestly I bet she hated not being able to tap her toes to it. My apologies to her.
Lyrics
Verse 1: Maybe there is a reason A stones throw from purpose That built the walls around us, Leaving us both on the Inside looking out?
Coming up with a fever, And other forms of excuses To hide the cuts and the bruises; To keep the lives that we Lost from being found.
A tiny house on the corner Playing familiar melodies Into the night on the quiet streets As we wandered the town We grew up in.
We gave up all our confessions Of petty crimes and heartaches, And heard the sound that our lungs make When they're getting closer to running Out of breath.
Chorus: There we were, Searching for something Knowing that there's nothing else We would rather hold than What we had.
On the corner of the road Nobody ever will know We left. Let's just keep on dancing.
Verse 2: You're not the person you think you are In mantra or mania; You're not the fuck-ups or phobias That run through your head In a dozen other voices.
I'm not the person who saves you, I'm just the one who can be there When you wake up cold from a nightmare; To give you quiet and pull you From the noises.
You're someone I wanna follow Through hard days and Halloweens, Taking the quizzes in magazines, Watching bad movies And wearing out bits to death.
You're worth spending a life on. You're more than trauma and running. You're beautiful and you're funny, You make me laugh til I'm running Out of breath.
There we were, Searching for something Knowing that there's nothing else We would rather hold than What we had.
On the corner of the road Nobody ever will know We left. Let's just keep on Dancing Out Of Step.
Let's just keep on Dancing Out Of Step Into the dead of the night Til it feels like Nothing's left.
The unusual meter of the verses really works with the rhymes and rhythms of the lyrics, then provides a nice contrast to the chorus. All the vocal layers in the chorus provide such a spacious feel along with the synth.
