this may be the first skirmish i've actually “finished” since… 2011? 😳
i was chatting with other fawmers about omnichords, and that i had one but i hadn't used it yet this FAWM. i saw there was a skirmish happening, so i decided to try to use it to write a song, and this is what came out.
did it 4-track style, sitting on the floor with a zoom R4 recorder, in this order:
- omnichord
- baritone ukulele → R4’s built-in mic
- fuzz guitar → line6 pod express
- lyrics & vocals → sm58 → zoom v3 vocal processor
when it came time to write lyrics, i forgot the exact prompt, so it morphed from “we might not get tomorrow” → “what if we don’t even get today?”
started about a half hour late, and it took me about 90 minutes to write and record the tracks, but then spent another hour(?) mixing and deciding if i wanted to add more layers in the DAW. but it's a skirmish and it's not my favorite thing ever, so it's pretty much as-is. i did add a harmony vocal to the choruses and little distortion and flanger to the omnichord on the bridge/instrumental.

this is so cool, really nice vibe and great take on the subject - i love the mixture of instruments and now kinda want to google Omnicord and see how much they cost :)

The sweep on the omnichord is pure magic, they are very special instruments. Really like this one, well done mate!

This one came out dope! The lyrics are really good and the omnichord sounds great…I e not gotten my hands on one but it’s something I’m on the lookout for. The fuzzy guitar sounds very classic! Nice one!

The light percussion against the “heartbeat” bass drum, the omichord against the rolled chords, and the ukulele against the crunchy guitar all make this song seem like a deep question is being asked and time is passing while waiting for the answer. I really like the feel of the song. The lyrics make me feel gratitude. I am forever amazed at how some of you long time FAWMers seemingly whip out magic in such short order. Excellent work and impressive skirmish!

Really beautiful use of the baritone ukulele to contrast the omnichord and guitar. So many good lyrics here; particularly like "in order to discover new lands, you have to lose sight of the shore" and "time is a pirate; pillaging in private". You should do more skirmishes!
