Liner Notes

#opentuning #nostalgia This is one of those "I had no idea what to do until I got the idea which then wrote itself' thing. For some reason, on my social media feeds these days I'm occasionally seeing these young fashion influencers, some of whom are really into retro 1970's styles. (No, I have no idea why I'm seeing this stuff, but there it is). Got me thinking about it all, at first I was just going to do a little 'lets make fun of these kids' thing, but once I started thinking about it, I thought, well... you have the song for that. And yes, back in the day I did have a pair of those Frye boots with the chunky heel.

Recorded using my old cheap resonator guitar, tuned to open G and then capo'd up two frets. Played the guitar, then did the vocal, then further overdubbed a harmonica. Im kind of psyched with how it came out, but curious what ya all think.

Lyrics

With your selvedge wide leg jeans And your thrifted Frye boots You tell all your followers Accept no substitutes

Your hair says 1973 Your phone, 2026 Turning our old history Into instagrammable pix

Vintage vinyl’s your jam With the scratches and the hiss Take a video of that needle drop The moment’s too good to miss

That retro gatekeeping, obsession with the old maybe it’s just evidence of a backdated soul

in the end that’s not so bad in fact its kind of a compliment cause back in my teenage years I was never so confident

So I’ll take out my old Frye boots The ones with the chunky heels Walk around like its ‘73 And remember how it feels

And maybe your enthusiasm For my fit while in high school Gives me that little lift that I was once and still am cool

So this is pretty perfect! Story evolves, totally relatable for all of us, and the musci accompanying is perfect for it.

"And maybe your enthusiasm / For my fit while in high school ... " is the lyrical highlight for me.

Harmonica is the perfect comment on the "still am cool" line!

Agree with the compliments in the other comments too.

Now where did my old high school band jacket go off to...

Fantastic lyrics that play on the edge of mocking and then pull back to reveal a larger truth. The guitar sounds amazing, and I love that harmonica break.

Your hair says 1973, your phone 2026. That is a seriously great line. And backdated soul. Awesome.

The guitar is so 70s I love it! I like that you use "And maybe your enthusiasm For my fit while in high school" -- some real Gen Z slang there with "fit"! (or maybe that's retro too and I didn't even know it!). Harmonica solo on point!

The reverby resonator gives this an old-timey feel, despite that the 70s aren't THAT old! Hey, wait a minute, I still have a pair of those Fryes... "What's old is new again'! Great 'bringing it all back' song.

That harmonica solo, oh wow! Also loving your delivery and flow of your lyrics, the line, "Vintage vinyl’s your jam. With the scratches and the hiss." I feel like you were calling me out there LOL. However, I have never owned Frye boots, need to go see if I can thrift them somewhere...

i never wore any frye boots or any of tha 70's stuff. what got my goat was in the 90s when everyone started wearing what were in my time cheap flannel workshirts and now those $5 cheapies were going for $50 or more just because some submusical rock stars from outlying towns were wearing them so all the midwesterners who had come to seattle to be rock stars were wearing them and were willing and able to afford the inflated prices. i felt really sorry for the lower middle class labor force for whom these shirts were a neccessity and now it took the better part of a pay check to buy one. i wonder..has the value of frye boots gone up?

Well it came out well. Love the resonator and that adds to the nostalgia feel. It's a good lyric, I have a pair of old boots, been walking downhill ever since.
