Memento Mori

Skirmish: Latin phrases (@beau_mickey)Liner Notes
I missed the Devil's Advocate Skirmish. But I read and listened most of the entries. So I guess I was keyed up to come up with something that echoes the idea of singing somethign passionately that I don't necessarily belevie in. So when I saw the Prompt for this Skirmish, it was obvious which phrase I would choose.
Instrument: Fender 12 String Model F-5-12 #12_string
Lyrics
Intro - (F) (G) (Am) (NC)
Memento (F) Mori (Be a(Am)ware that you will die) Memento (F) Mori - There's no (Am) Pie in the Sky Memento (F) Mori - There's no (Am) meaning to it all (G) Nature's a blind clockmaker You'll (F) get your (G) curtain (Am) call
(Am) We scratch around like chickens Looking for (Dm) something that makes sense We in(G)vent philosophies Or rel(Am)igions we foment We once chanted to the moon Or (G) worshipped the sun But we're (F) just some dumb (G) animals When (Am) all is said and done
CHORUS
(Am) Fourscore and ten, if you're lucky That's the (Dm) only reality Nature (G) built us to survive But what (Am) for? Well don't ask me! I won't even begin to speculate If there's (G) meaning in our lives (F) That's a road to (G) nowhere Where (Am) madness often thrives
CHORUS

I nicked the blind clockmaker from a book by Richard Dawkins. 😉
Wow, a finished and polished song in a skirmish! Sounds fantastic - I like the rhythms. And I especially like the lyrics "Nature's a blind clockmaker" then "we're just some dumb animals". Brilliant!

I did expect this to take a different direction with the whole memento mori thing. The meaninglessness of it all does strike a chord though. And speaking of chords, I love how full the chords sound on that 12 string. Nice!
i like the song, nice to hear the 12 string guitar..but i think you misunderstand the meaning of memento mori, which is not an existential hurrah, but a christian plea to face the reality of death in order to realize the futility of worldly things and focus on things eternal.
I know that, but the narrator is using the phrase just to remind people they are mortal. That's why the second line says "there's no pie in the sky". It's more nihilistic than existentialist. The song was influenced by the Devil's Advocate skirmish that happened when I was in bed.
That 12 string sounds great and suits this excellent chord progression you came up with. What a cracking lyric and I think this tune may be sticking with me 😊
Glad you liked it Andy. You can see the influence of the Devil's Advocate skirmish here.
That's a great, moody chord progression you've chosen. Love the slightly Spanish pronunciation you have on Momentor Mori, though other parts of the song remind me a bit more of 60s/70s English folk musicians.
Good song ate - i particularly like - nature is a blind clockmaker and the general uplifty style delivery for a topic that would challenge a lot of people. i really like this one
