Liner Notes

I've had a few lines of this lying around for a week or so now, maybe a bit longer, and today finished it off (or, what passes for finished) and I've had it sitting around here for a few hours because honestly I wasn't sure about posting such a ham fisted attempt at a #protest song. I prefer to be more subtle, but, I suppose, sometimes you just have to get it out.

It's meant as a kind of hymn for that kind of Christian who has never read the bible and has no idea what it even says but attempts to preach it anyway. I think part of my hesitation is that I'm worried people won't get it, and that actual Christians, the kind who actually understand it, would be offended. But having run it by a couple of people, I've just decided this is FAWM so I'm going to post it.

I do, at least, believe that Jesus would know what I'm getting at. Anyway. #ukulele folk, #fuc, it is what it is and all that.

Lyrics

There was a time when the stranger had prospered There was a time when the stranger had a home Then came the thunder and the fires And the stranger found himself left on his own

The stranger looked for comfort in an unfamiliar land When Jesus saw the stranger and he took him by the hand

Said Jesus to the stranger, "Why don't you get a job?" Said Jesus to the stranger, "You're just a lazy slob" Said Jesus, "If you're hungry, and you're desperate for scraps?" Said Jesus, "I won't help you if it comes out of my tax"

There was a time when the stranger had been happy There was a time the stranger revelled with his friends Then came the tremors and the shadows And the stranger grabbed all he had left and fled

The stranger crossed the seas and he tried to play his part When Jesus saw the stranger and he opened up his heart

Said Jesus to the stranger, "Has someone done you wrong?" Said Jesus to the stranger, "This is not where you belong" Said Jesus, "Not my problem if your home has been attacked" Said Jesus, "It's too full in here we'll have to send you back"

The stranger tried to settle and rebuild his life in peace When Jesus saw the stranger and he raised his arms to preach

Said Jesus to the stranger, "I don't like your coloured skin" Said Jesus to the stranger, "I'm going to turn you in" Said Jesus, "When I'm back from church and sharing joy and love" Said Jesus, "You will feel the weight of our iron glove"

Oh yes, this calls out the hypocrisy all good and proper like... Nicely done.

i dont quite understand what jesus has to do with it. maybe its a scottish thing. or you might be referring to the north american christian, for whom jesus is nothing more than a figure who makes a deal with you for eternal life. so i get it if you are making a reference to the hypocrisy of the north american christian. but the jesus of europe and latin america, as well as is followers, would not turn a stranger out. at least as based on the myths and tales that have been handed down. but i like the song. it is funny and wise. i think the satire would be more sharp, however, if the speaker were 'the christian' rather than jesus..and i dont say this out of feeling the mention of jesus is this context is offensive. rather, it is not offensive enough, as you are pinning it on a character of myth and folktales rather than the living people of our place and time. who hypocritically define themselves as christians.

@tiggy

All true of the fake Christians who ignore my favourite parable about the Good Samaritan (Who is thy neighbour). Thank you

This is brilliant! Last year during FAWM I wrote a similar song, listing all the things that Jesus didn't f*^%ing say. I agree with you that Jesus would totally get what you're doing with this song and approve. Let's all go and flip some tables, shall we?

Oh man, this is awesome, huge round of applause from me! I love that E7 chord in there. Also, your message is very captivating, thanks for sharing :)

Love the delivery! Well done

The bouncy melody and rhythm provide a nice contrast to the lyrical message though I'm hearing old folky influences in this one for sure. Sadly I know people who think like that.
