Reckless

Skirmish: Reckless (@robinleaf)Liner Notes
Well, I am still sick. Still can't sing. But that doesn't mean I won't sing! I had fun with this one. It is exciting and tragic! And with this I have my FAWM Scout Song Badge! So yeah, big win all around!
That guitar is my Alvarez baritone and I love it! Having a baritone guitar is like having a capo that can go down about four positions instead of only up!
Thanks @robinleaf for nice prompt!

Reckless February 17, 2026 https://johnstaplesmusic.com/FAWM2026/JohnStaples-Reckless.mp3
first time I saw you step into the street a bus bearing down a fait accompli I pulled you back quickly fell into your eyes next thing I know I'm in love and surprised
you thought you were precious but I saw you reckless you said I was jealous as you chased your deathwish your fire burned fiercely my love for you clearly could not protect us from reckless
a life lived completely you tempted the fates experienced fully not a second too late but a dark cloud descended our time was cut short with your broken lungs and my broken heart
you thought you were precious but I saw you reckless you said I was jealous as you chased your deathwish your fire burned fiercely my love for you clearly could not protect us from reckless
one day on the west coast on a bridge shining golden you climbed on the railing a life spent emboldened I climbed up there with you sky and ocean blue held tight to your hand and together we flew
you thought you were precious but I saw you reckless you said I was jealous as you chased your deathwish your fire burned fiercely my love for you clearly could not protect us from reckless

Fine fingerplayed guitar! Great rhyming with 'reckless'. I think your voice (in its current state) fits the mood of the song well!
Lotsa feels in this song. Excellent lyrical pacing, especially the pause before "from reckless"
Now I want to go hear more of your songs from before you got sick.
I am blown away by this song!! Your beautiful finger picking on that baritone axe is outstanding. The story here is tragic and wonderfully told. I was stunned by the ending at the golden gate bridge. (which we are both familiar with!!) but the surprise of the double death was exhilarating. Cold be damned, your voice is so very excellent. Mournful, soothing, emotive. Awesome!! When I grow up I wanna sing like you do!! The Prine similarity was not lost on me. The guitar intro sounded like like a Prine/Goodman creation right away. John himself would've been proud of you.
I am stunned that you could do this wonderful masterpiece in an hour!! I have no concept of how that could happen. You and other skirmishers have my unending respect and awe. I'm not kidding...it takes me days to write and finish a song half this good.
I totally LOVE this song. Love the low picked guitar. Love the sweet, mournful vocal. Love the tragic tale. Unbelievable talent on display. WOW!
ooh jealous of a deathwish is SUCH a neat concept. Love it. And the implied time signature change on that bit is a neat trick that works SO well. Great picking. The singing is FINE.
gosh, reminds me how we all worry about those we love (pets and people)
Those baritones are very good in fact beautiful in the right hands like this! i love the rhyming not always the obvious ones - very good! I lie te slow paced delivery i think adds to the emotion!
I love this, John! Whenever I'm sick people always tell me it was the best I ever sounded 😆 so I think you've got some of that here, a sort of hushed grittiness that pairs so well with the baritone guitar. Super tight writing! Way to weave a hell of a story.
This is gorgeous. You paint a painful portrait of following a difficult love. Love the phrase "could not protect us/ from reckless." The guitar (and the singing -- despite illness) are both lovely.
I thought "Prine" before reading the comments. Seems we have a majority opinion! Lovely guitar tone and effortlessly smooth travis picking. A quite beautiful melody that flows along like warm chocolate syrup. I wasn't expecting the "dead narrator" twist, but it's square in the middle of an honored folk tradition. Great, John.
Fantastic lyrics. That end gave me the chills. Totally caught me off guard and I love that. beautiful guitar, and even though you are ill, you sound great!
What a great song! The section that brings in the story of them jumping from the bridge was unexpected, and lifted the tragedy level from what I was expecting
Really enjoying how you crafted these lyrics and your vocal delivery of them. Your guitar sounds great too. Hope you feel better soon!
Thank you Brother Matt! One advantage to being sick is I can blame my bad singing on it!!
This has a dark Me and Bobby Mcgee feel to it. Like it!
Thank you Josie!
This is very good... Reminds me of John Prine . Very cool
Thanks Dave! I loves me some John Prine!
Hey, being a bit under the weather gave your song a lovely tenderness and vulnerability so maybe it's a silver lining! I'm reminded of the country stars of the past who had no need to belt out their tunes to make their point. So well done, a gentle sway of my head along to the rolling melody happened all by itself, and honestly, lovin it.
Hey Beth, thank you so much for listening and for your kind words! Means a lot!!
Oh John! The images in your lyrics filled my mind with pictures while I listened along. This is such a well-crafted song, I can't believe it's for a skirmish. You truly blow me away. The emotion in your voice, paired with your alvarez go together like peanut butter and jelly! Wow, thank you for sharing your song :)
Thank you for those kind words Abby! I'm so glad you like it!
Gosh I love this. Sad, yet dripping with love and care. "I climbed up there with you / sky and ocean blue / held tight to your hand / and together we flew" - turning tragedy into an image so beautiful takes real skill. And, yes, the bari pairs perfectly with your vocals on this one. Great creative choice. Look forward to hearing more.
Mark, thank you for your kind words!
You still sound really good John! And you're marching on and singing anyway! I was recovering from a bad cold the first week of Fawm so can relate. Excellent song, love that guitar part and your melody and vocal is nice, nice, nice! Super take on the prompt, with a complete and cogent story. The lines "could not hope to protect us, from reckless" - very good and with a nice hook. Some Prine vibes here! I enjoyed listening a lot.
Thank you so much! (Prine was/is my hero!)
Wonderful and gorgeous song. Hard to believe it was a skirmish!!! Gorgeous!
