Doing A Bradbury

NSFW Challenge: MADE-UP WORDSLiner Notes
It all happened on February 16th, 2002 at the Winter Olympics in Utah, US. Steven Bradbury won Australia's first ever gold medal in a winter games and instantly became a national hero. But the way he won was what made it even better. He was coming in last place for the entire race. At 28, he'd competed in two winter games prior and this was his last chance to compete for a medal. At the last corner turn from the finish line, the other four contenders collided and fell to their peril. Bradbury glided past and won the race. And from then on, many Australian's have coined the phrase 'Doing A Bradbury' to describe when an unexpected or unusual success occurs. So here's my dedication and hope that you may all achieve a Bradbury in your lifetime.
At first I wasn't anticipating doing falsetto on this one, but the key was too high for my lower register so I just went with it.

It's an amazing race/moment to watch, for those interested in the full version:
Lyrics
They said it can’t be done, But the race has just begun, Keep your eyes right on the prize, And don’t you ever give in,
Already paid your dues, doesn’t really matter if you win or lose, Look up high to the skies, to see the stars give you a grin,
Worn out so you fall behind, Stay on course with a one track mind, A little luck, who gives a fuck, just glide towards the finish line
They were skating on thin ice, In the rat race you gotta pay the price, Last turn left ‘em all out cold, Took a chance and you went for gold
Against all adversity, Just need one opportunity, When you try to do things gallantly Might just taste sweet victory,
Do yourself a courtesy, Seize the opportunity, What could be sweeter than Cadbury? How bout doing a Bradbury?
Don’t need to think you can, Only one thing to understand, Don’t sook, learn from this book, You won’t find treasure waiting in the mail,
Slow and steady wins the race, Just pray and hope they lose their pace, You can slide right in and win first place like a tiny slimy snail,
Why is everyone in such a rush? Dealer just handed you a royal flush, March to the beat of your own damn drum, And take the cake, not just the crumbs
The underdog can prove them wrong, Stick to your guns, stay true and strong, Just stay up to win the fight, Check the clock, til the time is right,
Against all adversity, Just need one opportunity, When you try to do things gallantly Might just taste sweet victory,
Do yourself a courtesy, Seize the opportunity, What could be sweeter than Cadbury? How bout doing a Bradbury?

Ahaha, I remember this happening very well. Both the summer and winter olympics remind me so much of playing Spectrum/Amiga/Playstation games of that nature, and this (the instrumental at least) could slot so lovingly into one of those games with all the chiptune elements. The vocal elevates into into something mega catchy, especially the chorus.. pure Prince or MJ.
and part of it was persevering after injury, no? sweet poppy sounds and the falsetto is cool. nice rat race overtones too. love the “damn drum”.
"Always try to do things gallantly" is a fine motto. I wasn't familiar with the story, but what a great tale it is. This is a great celebration of those rare moments when the Universe notices someone, says "here you go..." and gives them the boost of a lifetime. Heartwarming, fun, and yay, go Bradbury!
Glad I popped by simply for the Bradbury story, which (even as an Englishman) is heart warming and lovely! The falsetto is wonderful too, very Jake Shears. Cool synths/beats. Rhyming Cadbury and Bradbury is chef’s kiss. And the use of the clips as sfx is perfect. Niiiiice!!
I love this retelling, thanks for telling me about this cool moment in Olympic history I didn’t know about! I love how you work in samples from the clip itself, and that chorus is so infectious. These synths sound great!
I love this. What a rad alt-pop banger. Everything about this is so damn cool. You have a very unique sound. Love it.
I watched the video first, what and AMAZING outcome. I was literally shaking even though I knew the result.
And I love the sentiment of this song, the vibe, loving the theme / message.
