Skirmish: An Anti-Valentines Song (@ajna1960)Liner Notes
#skirmish As I started to try and write something sincere about how love has become commercialized, this turned into something else and I ditch my original lyrics. Yeah, this sounds more like how I really feel.
Lyrics
I’ve grown to hate Valentine’s Day I’ve grown to hate Valentine’s Day
For those who are single by choice or by chance the love songs leans in to mock what we lack Yeah…romance Who gives a rat’s ass
I’ve grown to hate Valentine’s Day I’ve grown to hate Valentine’s Day
The absence is staged put in a spotlight as though our solitude must be an oversight in a script everyone else has memorized
I’ve grown to hate Valentine’s Day I’ve grown to hate Valentine’s Day

This flows beautifully off the page and expresses a sentiment that many relate to!
I remember carrying around an empty flower box and telling people Happy VD in college, in the same spirit as this song evokes for me. That By choice or by chance is a great phrase that feels like it’s leading towards earnestness, then the Rat’s Ass comes to slap some sense i to the listener.
Empty flower box...oh that sounds like a song...
Great take on the prompt. Clearly not buying into the societal notion that we should all be paired up for some reason. Good for you!
I love the angle of taking on the cultural excesses — especially given how large the overlooked class is in the case of Valentine’s Day. The points of emphasis in the two verses really make the larger point.
I hear you, and appreciate this feeling of authenticity.
