Stones
Skirmish: Stones (@robinleaf)Liner Notes
I saw this skirmish when it popped up but didn't have time in the moment, so came back to it this morning. I immediately had a sense of what I wanted to talk about but it took a bit to get it going. I also wanted to pull out the banjo this morning, which I hadn't played in ages (possibly since last FAWM? 😬 ), but which was still mostly in tune in G modal, so we stayed there and I just noodled around until I found sounds that worked with the melody that was forming over the lyrics. Someday I will regain enough clawhammer skills to use the 5th string and sing at the same time lol
Anyway, this is a true story. I've spent a lot of the last couple of years coming to the conclusion that I've always been a witch, even though that label was really hard to claim for myself as someone who was raised in a conservative evangelical environment.

Lyrics
I was always weird and wild I was a witchy little child I must admit, despite the fact I grew up in the church Tried so hard to be good And live the way they said I should But in retrospect, it's evident That there were always signs
There were stones in my pockets Stones in the desk drawers Stones stashed in places No one ever thought to use before
I muttered incantations Fought persistent fascination With magic and with fantasies I wanted to be real Tried to hide my intuition Brush it off as superstition But I could never shake the sense That there was something more
There were stones in my pockets Stones in the desk drawers Stones stashed in places No one ever thought to use before
I'm still weird and wild Now that witchy little child Knows their power and their worth And still today it's true
There are stones in my pockets Stones in the desk drawers Stones stashed in places No one ever thought to use before

Nice trance-y banjo! The mysterious melody and gentle vocal delivery are perfect for telling the story of the "weird and wild" child with magic stones stashed everywhere. I love the chorus! And I really like the way you brought the story into the present day at the end.
There's something about the way this sounds that feels like sorting through stones as a kid. Meditative, almost, but with a bit of texture.
Nice bit of banjo! Always tricky to challenge those young expectations!
This has a wonderful honest feeling delivery that draws one into the story. Love the insight. Beautiful chorus. Love the melody and finger picking. Really lovely!
I love the first soaring melody idea over this simple banjo background. Enjoying this mysterious idea of unknown powers and magic.
what a fantastic write!!! I so relate. the lyrics in the chorus are brilliant. stones everywhere! and these two lines are a favorite "Tried to hide my intuition Brush it off as superstition" been there. your voice is so soothing against the mids and almost Medieval feel of the banjo which I thoroughly enjoyed hearing you play. Really beautiful.
