Indiewave

Liner Notes

Back in 2017 I did a tune called "Bossed and Squashed with Balance Lost" which, despite its stupid title, was one of my favourite songs from that year. So now I'm just repeating the trick of repetitive, twinkly guitar lines over a driving bassline. It's basically synthwave but with guitars, hence indiewave. This is a word that already exists somewhere, but not as a genre, so I'm claiming it for this style. It's about as meaningful as "postcore" or "squidgebop". Also, I haven't yet used any sampled beats this year, so I thought it was time to dust off the crates and dust on the tunes.

I did harbour ideas of having some kind of lyrical hook or even a middle 8, but in the end I got lazy and just went with stream of consciousness lyrics again, and a structure that doesn't really go anywhere.

Lyrics

Why am I expecting perfection It makes no sense even asking the question I want too much That I don't deserve I didn't earn Never seen and never heard I do it for love I don't need payment A silent moment On a crowded pavement you didn't move But the lights are changing Just stop and stare Now it's time to engage it

Find a way of letting go The memory of that girl A feeling I've outgrown The trappings of this world The wave is crashing down Nothing I can hear Caught in the undertow Direction disappears

Walk the streets for hours I'm working through some precious thoughts That have no use I'm not walking away I really don't want to change (Just to be, today) The rising smoke stench of decay Washed away by heavy rain Letters replace the sound of voices You can't unmake your choices

Find a way of letting go The memory of that girl A feeling I've outgrown The trappings of this world The wave is crashing down Nothing I can hear Caught in the undertow Direction disappears

This sounds completely realized, with a great performance and mix. I want to listen to an entire album! Great sounds and vibe. Yeah I dig this!

Yeah this definitely feels like it's back in your comfort zone after a few more envelope-pushing tracks but it's a REALLY good comfort zone, love this sound every time you bash one out.

Yes, that repeating guitar line under the driving bass is really working for me. Something about mixing the ethereal with that proppelation is pushing all the right buttons! The whole yearning vibe works really well in nostalgic sounds and lyrics.

This genre has serious legs! I love the jangle pop sound. It feels like all the sounds we sampled from the 80s but fit together so organicly that it is completely new and modern. Your vocals fit perfectly, too. So good.

I think your approach to the song is really reflected in the lyrics. "Why am I expecting perfection?"

This song has a great movement to it that's not quite 80's, not quite modern. I really like the vocals.
