Liner Notes
A song for Friday the 13th. It's in 13/8 time, and the name is a German expression for an unlucky person (literally a "tar-bird").
Although it's still all in-the-box, hand-sequenced fake instruments, I was going for a Jaga Jazzist / Supersilent vibe this time.

So unsettling, to start... Then it comes into the groove. Interestingly, I felt it could fit into the "Terminator" canon (but, I am a film composer - so there's that), because the main theme there is also in 13.
That groove, though.
Cool use of odd time signature, reminds me a bit of Tortoise and Tom Skinners solo album, the rhodes bass and horns has a certain Jaga vibe especially round One Armed Bandit, Martin Horntveth Jaga's drummer has his studio a floor up from mine so bump into him a lot, if you haven't already you should check out his solo project Gouldian Finch especially the 2025 album Schizo
Thanks for the recommendations. One Armed Bandit was very much on my mind, I love that sound. I haven't heard Gouldian Finch or Tom Skinner, so I'll look them up.
great use of the time signature! i love that the drums sometimes go outside and do their own thing too
This starts of with an almost Philip Glassian feel to it, with the way it plays with repetition and the unusual time signature. Then when the drums kick in, there's an element of jazz too! It's all a very intriguing (and enjoyable) listen, and flows together very nicely!
It's a bit like music you could put behind a comic. I can see it before my eyes when hearing this: characters falling into potholes, kicking into cans of paint, and everything else we know from the cartoons. Especially the whole percussion and little effects make it sound like the whole structure just falls apart due to sheer bad luck. It's a wonderful disaster happening right there. Perfect. The 13/8 lends itself perfectly for this.
Also, nothing wrong with hand-sequenced fake instruments in a box. ;)
Also, I learned something today about the Dutch word 'Pechvogel' which means the same, where 'pech' is Dutch for bad luck. Never knew there's a connection with the 'tar' meaning.
This time signature is so interesting! I love the horn-like tones. The percussion has a really neat beat to it, it does make me think of a clumsy bird trying very hard to walk/fly straight and... not quite managing haha. Really evocative! This almost feels medieval (complimentary) especially toward the end. I love that one particularly gritty drum sound, so perfect. Awesome work!
Ha I didn't even realize it was Friday the 13th! I love an odd time signature. It is so cool hearing the percussion along with the rhythmic arpeggiating synth in this time signature. Oh I like that sprinkle of high synth. Great ending too. Super creative song and you definitely nailed the challenge!
Great! I don't do much jazz playing and challenging time signatures and I am in awe when people can do this creatively and professionally. Truly a measure of skill in this piece!
