Singers of Truth

Liner Notes
This is a filk, to the tune of Seanan McGuire's "Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves." I will not be posting a recording.
You can find her original song here:
Lyrics
V1 Arlo told stories of garbage and Thanksgiving dinner Rejecting a war where our nation could not be a winner He told of his trip through the courts where he saw Blind justice before him and how it would draw His future of getting inspected, rejected and warned That his crime made him unfit for duty, and he would be scorned
V2 Woody told tales of Beach Haven, with racial hate thriving Old Man Trump was a racist, and Black folks were just not surviving Trump’s tower of hatred and racism wild His hatred of Black man and woman and child And how he drew color lines, keeping the Black folks away “Old Beach Haven just ain’t my home,” was all Woody could say
CHORUS Arlo and Woody and Gordon and Joan Speaking up for the oppressed and alone Bringing attention to trouble and pain Singers of truth to the world Each of them said, and I find I agree The rules are the problem, we’ve got to break free So tell them the truth, be a gadfly, you’ll see Singers of truth to the world
V3 Gordon, he told us of children in uniforms, saying They’d fight all our wars and their parents were left behind praying Their sons would survive it and come back alive But the devil would smile and the fires would thrive Even if they came back, they would never be children again For we sacrifice children for war, and the wars never end
CHORUS
V4 Joan told the story of children who died in a bombing Four children at church, where the hatred of men came a-calling Addie and Cynthia, Carol, Denise Lost their young lives and we all lost our peace How many times must the blood run like wine through a sieve? How much more must we tell, before people will finally believe?
CHORUS
V5 Richard and Judy and Joni and Phil and Odetta All of them told us how we could just make the world better Dylan and Peter and Mary and Paul, Calling us out and calling us all, Saying it’s time to let go of the hate and the war The children are dying, the world doesn’t need it no more
CHORUS
CHORUS 2 For violence is never the answer to hate It isn’t required, it isn’t our fate We won’t take a back seat, we’re telling it straight We’ll march in the streets for the truth All our roads lead us to march for us all We have to bring freedom to answer the call We won’t hide behind a closed door
OUTTRO We’ll tell them the truth and we’ll finally see Truth is how we save the world Be singers of truth to the world
Comments
Yes - Arlo and Woody Guthrie, Gordon Lightfoot, and Joan Baez are the four in the chorus.
What a glorious tribute! And that energy is needed again. Thank you for writing this!!
Thank you for commenting! I was beginning to be worried that no one had seen it! I'm going to email Seanan and ask for her permission to record it (it's her tune) but that won't be this week.
Cool idea! Is Gordon Gordon Lightfoot? I don't know his work very well, but that doesn't diminish the song for me. Great filk!
