THIS IS FOR FANS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES
I read about a challenge somewhere that asked for songs made using only a bass for accompaniment. I have never tried singing over a bass only accompaniment. So this was the moment to give it a go.
I saw earlier that one of the Skirmishes I had missed was titled "Element". I immediately thought of the famous phrase attributed to Sherlock Holmes (though I believe I read somewhere that it never appeared in the stories only in the films).
Anyway, with that in mind I started off in one position to make it easier and came up with a simple verse riff and a chorus riff.
I imagined Watson writing up the details of the crimes they had solved and forgetting some points and asking the great man to clear up his doubts.
Given that, I decided to make the Verse into questions by Dr Watson and the Chorus into Holmes' replies.
Next I used a Sherlock Fan site to remind me of three stories I read as a young man. Fans of the tenant of 221B Baker Street will spot which ones immediately.
Editing to fit the lyrics into the riffs followed and that was it. It took a bit longer than the Skirmish deadline, but I was only taking that as inspiration.
And now? "The Game's afoot!"
Lyrics
How'd you know who the killer was? How'd you know he used a snake? What was the clue that sealed the deal for you What was the killer's big mistake?
It's elementary dear Watson Let me throw some light in your gloom Snakes can slip through the ventilator And Roylott moved the girls to this room
In the case of the Norwood builder How'd you know he was still alive? Why'd he leave his cash to Cornelius? What was he trying to connive?
It's elementary dear Watson McFarlane was being framed Cornelius was an alias for when he disappeared So that's why in the will he's named.
I've still some questions to ask you? What was strange about the dog in the night?? And where was the horse during all this time? And how did poor Straker die?
It's elementary dear Watson Dogs don't bark at people they know The horse was disguised with a local dye And Straker died from a horse hoof blow

Fun! Does this count as filk? It feels like a dream I might have after binging the show or something. It goes well with that bass only accompaniment. Thanks for playing :)
That's hilarious Bernie. Such a good listen. The bass accompaniment is so apt. You know your Holmes, Watson. Cheers
Fun and fantastic take on the prompt. A pleasure to listen to.
