A Buccaneer from Yesteryear
by @scottsimpsonmusic · @greengrassgirl
Liner Notes
This is the second song that Patty (@greengrassgirl) invited me to collaborate with her on. I loved it right away cause it’s a sea shanty and I love me a good sea shanty! My prompt was pretty easy for achieving the end I had in mind via Suno:
Cinematic, Traditional Folk Shanty, Acoustic, Male Brogue Vocal Lead And Harmonies, Guitar, Hand Drums, Fiddle, Multi-Voice Harmonies On Chorus
Enjoy!
From Patty (@greengrassgirl): Scott knew immediately what I had in mind for this lyric, and I think he did a great job. I remember suggesting "something jaunty, but not to the point of 'corny/cutesy.'" I think he nailed it. Made it a fun song.
Lyrics
A Buccaneer From Yesteryear © Patty Lakamp 2025 Music arr. Scott Simpson
V1 I never went in for the genteel sports My style tends more to the knife Nae for me, high society I lean to more grit in my life
V2 Come sit with me, sir, by the fireside And share your adventures with me Fill my cup with Jamaican rum I’ll regale you with tales of the sea
Ch I’m a Buccaneer from yesteryear This scar is my souvenir Any man tries to con me or reckons to rob me He’ll find himself missing an ear I’m a Buccaneer from yesteryear But you, sir, have nothing to fear
V3 I sailed as a youth on a bonny sloop We struck at the frigates with speed Fought to the death for a treasure chest The blood, it ran red in the sea
V4 ‘Twere many a day we had nil to eat Fresh water as precious as gold Broomstick men who would kill for a crust No mind it were covered in mold
Ch I’m a Buccaneer from yesteryear This scar is my souvenir If a man tries to con me or reckons to rob me He’ll find himself missing an ear I’m a Buccaneer from yesteryear But you, sir, have nothing to fear
Br The Pirate life promised glory and gold Dreams of fortune filled my head But I’m haunted at night by the eyes of the dead And I still keep a knife by my bed
Ch I’m a Buccaneer from yesteryear This scar is my souvenir If a man tries to con me or reckons to rob me He’ll find himself missing an ear I’m a Buccaneer from yesteryear But you, sir, have nothing to fear
Out You, sir, have nothing to fear

Hi, Susan. So glad you enjoyed the song. I don't know how I learned to write in this style. I just read a LOT and I guess these characters just come to mind. @scottsimpsonmusic's skill and imagination really brought it to life. What a fun hobby! Thanks for the support and enthusiasm.
Just wow! The story totally grabs you. Very cinematic! Combined with the perfect score, performance, dynamics... Just wow! Fantastic.
Thanks so much Bob! I’m grateful to Patty for inviting me into this collab!
Patty, I am so impressed with these lyrics. You can truly write in any genre. I love me a Celtic song, and a sea shanty style is even better. Cool story, song, and collab!
This feels like a very modern take on some good sea music (like the other commented I also played in celtic bands!) - Feels like Ryan Tedder (One Republic) or something like that. Good illustration of the character (I appreciate his assurances but I would probably checking my watch and saying I need to head home to take the dog out to pee!) - good song!
Hah! Your comments made me chuckle. Thanks! So glad you liked the song. I thought Scott did a great job of capturing the "sea shanty" vibe without making it sound corny. That's a talent. Now I'm going to go explore your page! Love how this "reciprocation" works.
Fantastic! For many years I was the singer in a Celtic Rock band playing the Irish pubs and clubs around the country and this song would have brought the house down every time!
Very cool! I’m glad the song is striking right where we wanted it to! Appreciate your informed assessment.
Nice Job. Love the Celtic vibes ---Keep writing Great Job
Appreciate it! When I read these lyrics from Patty, I knew just where I wanted to take it!
Wow, this is a killer collab! Great lyrical story, and the performance is pure Celtic Sea Shanty - melody, harmony parts and instruments. But I have to ask, after seeing the liner notes for your other collab, how much of this is AI?
As I mention elsewhere, I’ve produced many albums with no ai, but this year I’ve been working hard to see where ai fits comfortably in my creative process. The music elements of this are entirely ai. Of course, Patty’s lyrics are 100% Patty. I work to balance the human and the ai in my projects and in my work in general. Of course… though I say the music is “entirely” ai I really mean you aren’t listening to any live-recorded tracks… but what you hear couldn’t have made itself either. Practiced prompting, layers of iterative prompting and choices about elements and final mastering are always done by a human. Thanks for asking. All of this is controversial… but I’ve never encountered a music-making tool I was afraid to try out, and I see no reason to start now!
Oh my -- the sound of this! So compellingly presented. The story/lyrics/details are killer and the production -- wow. I'm going to listen to this on repeat. I love the traditional form but some things going slantwise. Just wow. I have no words.
Thanks, Beth! What a flattering comment. So glad you liked our song!
I remember the lyrics for this one and great to hear it brought to life. Chorus is really catchy. It feels like a "sea-shanty plus" as it goes in some nice unexpected directions. Hey!
patty has been reading blackbeard's mail, and scott has just the voice to send the song sailing across seven oceans. i love his lack of affectation..the song comes across clear and clean as a whistle in the wind.
Hey, Bill! Great to receive a Thumbs Up from you on this. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Bill! This one was a hoot to make and Patty’s lyric carries it perfectly out to sea!
Patty you totally captured the sea shanty tone in these lyrics and created a very memorable character here! How did you learn to write in this style? It is like another language. So impressive. I also like how the Buccaneer invites us into the song by telling the story to us.
