I Can’t Write a Song About the Epstein Files
Liner Notes
I was doom-scrolling a bit today and saw lots of coverage of Pam Bondi’s appearance in front of Congress, trying futilely to defend the administration’s stonewalling on the Epstein files. I wanted to write a song about the horror of it all, but I felt like I wouldn’t be able to do it justice (there is absolutely no way to do it justice). And then the line “I can’t write a song about the Epstein files” came into my head as part of a chorus. So I went with that. I hope it’s one small way to get the word out about the atrocities that are currently being covered up.
Lyrics
Verse 1 Oh, I’ve written lots of songs about every single topic, From my love life to the fact I’m getting old. There’s one about the way that everybody thinks I’m gay, And one about how I’m always cold. Most of them are humorous attempts to paint a picture Of life in this strange time and place. Or they’re silly stories from my youth, like how eating broccoli Always made me make a funny face.
Pre-Chorus I don’t write songs to terrify I don’t write songs to scare. So how can I address the topic I see everywhere?
Chorus I can’t write a song about the Epstein files. I’m just a silly white dude with a ukulele. I can’t even come close to expressing the horror These young girls were subjected to daily. I can’t write a song about the Epstein files, But I can’t NOT write that song.
Verse 2 Yes, I’ve written protest songs that attack the fascist leanings Of the government we somehow have right now. I imagine I’m a punk, though I’m mostly just acoustic, And being really angry, well, I don’t know how. Even when I’m raging ‘gainst the machine, I still use humor Cuz I think it helps me get my point across. If I get you to laugh, maybe I’ll start your mind a-thinking, But with this topic, all I see is loss.
Pre-Chorus I don’t write songs to terrify. I don’t write songs to scare.
Bridge Rich men should not be protected. Victims should be believed. And even in a simple ukulele song, I hope this message is received.
Chorus I can’t write a song about the Epstein files. I’m just a silly white dude with a ukulele. I can’t even come close to expressing the horror These young girls were subjected to daily. I can’t write a song about the Epstein files, But I can’t NOT write that song.
Outro If bringing the truth to the light means the whole system will collapse, then it should definitely collapse.

a good approach to protesting - i think using humour to get the point across works well. Plus, ukulele's rock
Adressing the topic by adressing how you can't adress it. Very clever. And that outro just sound like the movie scene where the main caracter walks in slow motion turning his back to a massive explosion. It reminded me of Karl Kraus, the satirist writer in Wiena in 1939. He wrote 500 pages of the finest analysis I read on nazism (Third Walpurgis Night) and it beginns with "I can't find anything to say on Hitler".
Great job with this! I’ve taken a similar approach before where I’ve gone, “how am I suppose to write about this?” And then written about how I don’t know how to write about it. The pre-chorus and chorus had that familiar punk flavour that works so well.
Excellent! And yes, if the toleration of the abuse of kids of any sort is needed to maintain "the system" then it's our moral obligation to see that collapse. It will be replaced. There is nothing at all special about those in power aside from their evil and cruelty, in some cases. Maybe there was a time when we expected them to among our best. Maybe there was a time when they actually were. We should want that, not those that are the worst of us also having that power.
This song is perfect. I think you accomplished exactly what you set out to do. You will have people talking and thinking about this when and after they hear this song. The chorus is catchy as hell. And the last line is true. I'm convinced more than ever that it is of utmost importance that we keep creating art and sharing it. It's a way we can speak to the parts that connect us. Our only hope, really. Thank you for this.
Thanks! I appreciate that! I almost left out that last line, and I’m glad I didn’t listen to the part of me saying it wasn’t going to work.
Let the whole system collapse, please! I love when you go into spoken word, it’s attention grabbing every time and this time is no exception. Thank you for addressing such a horrific topic with humanity and grace.
what a great protest song, inside a meta-protest song! I totally feel the dilemma- its hard to write about and hard not to write about it! the whole thing is really expertly done, the uke is perfect for this, and there are so many great lines! well done!
