Perfect Heart
by @mace66
Liner Notes
On the 8th December I was unfortunate enough to have a heart attack and ended up in hospital for 9 days.
I was a bit peeved by this because 1. I have never smoked, 2. I go in the gym every day for an hour, 3. I don't drink alcohol and 4. I follow a plant based diet. The consultants professional opinion was that I was 'Very unlucky'
We were due to travel up to London to see my son on the 20th December, but obviously that wasn't going to happen, so this song is inspired by my phone call from the hospital to my son.
Oh and by the way I really am doing fine...
For those interested in the gear and recording process -
It was recorded using Cubase Elements. The guitar parts were played on my Ovation 12 string (DI'd into the DAW) and a Squier acoustic guitar (recorded with an SE Electronics 2200A condenser mic.) The bass is a Squier PJ Bass that I swapped the original pickups for a set of EMG active ones. Drum sound was from the Cubase library played real time from a keyboard controller. The string sounds are from the Cubase HaLion library. Vocals were recorded using the SE Electronics mic. All effects, phaser, reverb, delay, chorus - are the stock Cubase ones. The Guiro and Vibraslap are 'real' acoustic instruments again recorded with the SE Electronics mic
Lyrics
It took me by surprise, More than words could ever say my darling. What was gonna' be, Just another winters day to me darling,
But don't worry, 'Cos I'm doing really fine. Please don't worry, You don't need a perfect heart...
If I could just go back, You know I wouldn't change a thing my darling. We can just carry on, We can laugh and dance and sing to you darling,
But don't worry, 'Cos I'm doing really fine. Please don't worry, You don't need a perfect heart...
Maybe I'll call you up, We can talk about the past, darling About our futures too, Time just seems to fly so fast my darling,
But don't worry, 'Cos I'm doing really fine. Please don't worry, You don't need a perfect heart...

Thanks for listening - the heart attack was a bit of a surprise, but I guess that it was keeping myself fit that meant I survived it and seem to be on the mend so quickly
Inspiration comes from the strangest of places. I'm glad you're doing really fine and that you shared this with us. Great mix of instruments in here combining to make a full and vibrant sound.
Sorry to hear about the heart attack, but I'm glad you not only recovered well but also made art from it! It sounds great! The string synths are a nice throughline & as a fellow guiro + vibraslap user in my own FAWM songs I respect the hustle!
Cool production. And I love the percussive elements you bring into the mix. So neat!
And I hope you're continuing to feel better.
Sorry to hear about your health shock but very glad that you got through it. An experience as heavy as that is bound to make you reflective and it's great you've created this song. Nice rich production and engaging singing. I like the double-meaning of 'you don't need a perfect heart' - says a lot.
Wow that’s some story - glad you are doing well! I guess you never know? On to the music - I really like the feel of this - the angular guitar phrase endings are really fab. The bass sets the whole thing up for solidity. The whole percussion backdrop is fantastic - all sorts of stuff going on there - guiro is not heard enough!!! The singing is just great suits the whole mood of the song so well. Great write - really loved this
Sorry about the heart, but mad respect for another plant-based person. 🤗 🌻
This song sounds great, by the way. Lots of cool choices made, and executed well. Got a great voice to boot. Definitely a keeper.
