Cargo 200 (Another Zinc-Lined Box)
Liner Notes
The Russian invasion of Ukraine nears the four-year mark, and it has settled into a near stalemate. This song tells the story of the war from three different Ukrainian soldiers -- a drone operator, a sniper, and an F-16 pilot.
The song is somewhat dark. In addition to discussing the soldiers' duties, the lyrics mention some of the Russian atrocities committed during the invasion. As an explanation of the title, Cargo 200 is the code phrase used by the Russian military for dead soldiers transported back to Russia, where they are shipped in zinc-lined boxes.
Lyrics
Verse One:
It’s freezing cold in Bakhmut, and the midnight sky is black My drones are always fully charged and ready to attack One hundred thousand children have been stolen from their homes Until the Russians bring them back, I’m ready with my drones
Chorus:
We’re ending this invasion And we’re turning back the clocks So we’ll fulfill our duty and fill Another zinc-lined box
Verse Two:
My rifle’s fully loaded, and my loophole is prepared My perch is high and lonely, but I’m not remotely scared My uncle lived in Bucha, and they found him in a pit To protect my wife and family, in my sniper’s nest I sit
[repeat chorus]
Verse Three:
I climb into the cockpit of my U.S. F-16 I take out Russian missiles with this beautiful machine The missiles kill civilians, and they put me to the test The barrages are ongoing such that I can never rest
[repeat chorus]
Bridge (can also be played as Verse Four):
Defend our homes, defend our land, defend our family We’re fighting for survival and we’re fighting to be free We’re beating an invasion back, and if we have to die With all our strength remaining, raise the blue and yellow high
[repeat chorus]
Comments
Dark indeed - but you've told the story in a compelling way and I love the way you've taken multiple points of view to give the listener a broad view of the situation. The chorus is especially powerful and the use of "fulfill" and "fill" in the same line is so clever.
That is such a horrifying situation, with no end in sight. Each verse is a vivid little portrait. The chorus has such grim specificity. I'm going to have a hard time getting that image out of my head
Wonderful perspectives on the horrors of war. Especially liked the F-16 pilot referencing the wonderful machine defending his home. I feel like this would be a powerful song if sung by a Ukrainian.
"Svoboda Ukrayini", "Slava Ukrayini". Well expressed and pertinent and poignant from those perspectives. Cheers
