Zugunruhe
Liner Notes
#garage #onetake #oddtimesignature I wrote much of this for a skirmish in which we were supposed to feed our lyric into Google Translate and then sing the song in a language we don't speak. Hopefully I'll do that at some point. I have jury duty at the moment. Right before rushing out the door I did a hasty rewrite and recorded a rough one-take.Sorry about the hacking cough. I have some ideas to smooth out the transition from 3/4 to 5/4. Maybe I'll get around to it.
Zungunruhe is migration-anxiety, when birds get agitated and feel that they must set off. (Apologies to German speakers. When I re-record I'll try to do a better job of pronouncing that word.)
Lyrics
Oh...come, let's go! Come let's go
There must be a word for leaving everything undone Maybe German has the answer for us Shouldn’t birds take flight when their time has come? Maybe “zugunruhe” gets it done
Oh...come let's go!
There must be a word for leaving everything undone There must be a word for leaving everything undone
Maybe German has the answer for us Shouldn’t birds take flight when their time has come?

The “come let’s go” hook is instantly catchy, and the way you play with 3/4 into 5/4 gives it that slightly skittery, restless feel that totally suits the theme.
There’s something wistful under the humour too, and even the rough one-take energy and cough add to the anxious momentum. A very cool little song.
Certainly a word for me - thx for the education. cant stay long my Zungunruhe is calling me .I love these nice little almost notes - i am sure tehre is a better word for that - maybe german Stückchen maybe. Very entertaining and yes i want to hear you say Zungunruhe
My best pal is German - she has an answer for everything -we laugh about it a lot. Sounds like you had fun making this too. the come let's go hook is very hooky. Most enjoyable. :-)
You're on to something grand with these skittery skattery time sig changes. Loving it. And vagabonds and travelers are poorly understood and underappreciated. They have their own set of emotional hurdles, so different from the anxiety of gathering too much stuff and not knowing what to do with it.
There's something so wistful here; I don't know how you always manage to tap into that emotion even when you yourself are literally laughing in the middle of your song! Anyway, very much enjoyed it as always!
the cough threatening throughout gives the vocal delivery an appropriate sense of anxiety. love the repeated 'come let's go..'
Love this little sketch! That is a brilliant word to center the song around and it sounds very smooth and natural, always a sign you’re doing something right in an odd time signature song.
Yesterday I read your German lyrics. Now I am happy to know what it should sound like! The time signature changes are interesting. I wish I could do this. It has become a nice song about breakup and departure.
But I never heard that word in my native German language before. But I'm no ornithologist, even though I like to listen to Budgie from time to time 😄. I see: FAWM educates!
I live this! It’s so unique and catchy! Great tune right here I really enjoyed the listen.
