Liner Notes

I work as a tutor with youth services and one of the things we do is make music. The student played most of the keyboards (I did the drum beat) and wrote and (with much reticence) she sang the words. The chorus came from (not waving but drowning) Stevie Smith, but brilliantly when it didn't scan the student said 'what about life, life?' and so that's what it is.

Lyrics

Went up the empire state to see what I could see. It's high it goes up to the sky it really frightened me.

Much too far out of my life life before I turn away

Walked round Korea town with lanterns all around Its big with fried rice in the air and no-one seems to care

Much too far out of my life life before I turn away

This is coincidentally the second NYC song I’ve run across in a row, and I love it. The sweet vocal sounds up in the thin air and there’s a nice amount of space between lyrical thoughts. I like the somewhat spare (but not simplistic) production and the song has an “outsider art” quality I can’t quite pinpoint but really like. .

There's something very touching and tender about this song. Your description of the process and collaborator only makes it more so. It holds a gentleness and fragility within its simplicity and I really like it a lot. there should be more people fearlessly using their "life-life" skills in this way.

This is great. Best part is those beautiful vocals. Enjoyed the whole thing. I like how its short and descriptive...like a koan. Thanks.
