Underrated Ways to Change the World

by @dr_griff

Liner Notes

Read a blog post the other day that hit me pretty hard, and I thought it should be a song. So, here.

Also, the blog post is here: https://www.experimental-history.com/p/underrated-ways-to-change-the-world

Lyrics

V1 We all know the ways to change the world There are just two ways that we can go Be powerful and rich, or political and pitch A high-cost high-yield high-road way to grow

Or we can be a martyr to our causes Self-sacrifice, unselfishness and care Work with the poor and needy, shun the rich and greedy Create a world where everything is fair

CHORUS (But) There are underrated ways to change the world We have so many ways that this can still be won There are avenues we haven’t even traveled There are so many ways to do what must be done

V2 Be the second-bravest person, the whistleblower’s friend Be the person who makes much more noise and shows That the problem is a problem, don’t let it die and end When the second-bravest person’s whistle blows

Create a place where people share their knowledge A scene where they are valued and can see That what they know should not be hidden deeply That it makes a better world for you and me

CHORUS

BRIDGE The underrated ways to change are clever They are hidden, they are quiet, they are clean They will help us when the whole world’s saying “never” They will find a way to show us the unseen

V3 Get information to the ones who need it Test a theory, find the humor, be a mole Be the person who is just another number Working hard behind the scenes to reach the goal

Show up each and every day to do the labor Show up each and every night to hold a hand It may not feel like you are doing something But I guarantee you’re helping where you can

CHORUS

OUTTRO There are so many ways to do what must be done We have so many ways to do what must be done Come with me, we will do what must be done

YES YES DEFINITELY THIS! Thank you. I love this list of ways to help!

Go read the blog post, too! It's wonderful stuff.

Yes! What an important message. I also love this on a sort of meta-level - quiet introspective song is an underrated form of protest song, I guess. 🙂 Beautifully done.

Thank you, Marilisa. That means a lot to me.

Yes, so many ways to fight, so many ways to help. This is an important reminder. I've sometimes joked that you can't change someone's mind with a song but I don't really think that's true - even calling out the nonsense by singing (and conspicuously having fun with it) is one of the little things you can do, so please keep doing it!

Thanks, Edwin. I will be bringing this one to circles, for sure.

Such a beautiful song. It makes me realize that even if I can’t go out and do something, I can be the person in the background helping the people doing the hard work. Thank you for this excellent song.

Thank you, sweet guy. You can totally be that person in the background.

Awww. Thank you for writing this. It's a needed tribute to the fact that helpers are not always big splashy figures, sometimes they just bring a little joy or determination or compassion to the grander scheme of things, and that matters. The gentle guitar and melody fit this message well. It's a quiet song, but that doesn't mean it didn't make a difference. ❤️

Thank you. Your response inspired the Mr. Rogers song I put up yesterday. I appreciate you.

@aneil

Wow I love this it resounds in my heart and I long to carry it beyond my seat using my not so beautiful feet

Aw, I appreciate you, Aneil. Thank you. :)

This is so beautiful I want to cry (in a good way). I really love the message here and you've put it to such a good tune, really good for singing along. So much of the work of changing the world is done in quiet, unremarked moments, so thank you for giving those moments a song.

Thank you so much, Kiraly. That was kind of my goal here. :)
