There lots of different things running through this, from the Catholic prayer, to the ideas of performance as shamanic but the struggle between positivity and acknowledgement of darker characters traits. Buddhist traditions of talking to the fairies in the bushes that are very similar to Irish traditions. The ninth wave was used as an idea where the tide would no longer pull you in so leaving you to the date to the gods. And ancient Irish marriage vows of "I'm yours as long as you want me" rather than from death do us part, which is rather trapping.
