Know Your Rights

Liner Notes

This is political sound art more than it is a song.

The statement here is an assertion of rights intended to be read to those who aiming to violate them. These are rights granted to ANY person in the United States or any of its territories, guaranteed by the 4th and 5th amendments to the Constitution.

The text here comes from NAKASEC, the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium, who publishes an app called Know Your Rights. The app presents the statement below in multiple languages, including an audio player that will broadcast the message in English. The app will also notify selected contacts that your are in a position in which you need to declare your rights to an official.

The text is repeated in this piece in English, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Simplified Mandarin, Hindi, Urdu, and Arabic. The voices are computer generated using https://texttovoice.online. While I'd like to have used actual speakers of these languages, it wasn't feasible on FAWM timelines.

Percussion layers / loops are added throughout the song, chosen to reflect modern electronic beats from some of the cultures associated with the languages. Which is admittedly a little chaotic. Again, sound art.

Anyway, enjoy this for what it is.

Lyrics

I choose to exercise my legal rights. I will remain silent, and I refuse to answer your questions. I do not consent to a search of myself, my belongings, or my property. If I am detained, I have the right to contact an attorney immediately. I refuse to sign anything without advice from an attorney.

Blimey. How awful that such a thing is necessary, but how handy to have it on hand to make music with! Chaotic? Nah. I love how it keeps shiftng in repsonse to the voices. I could totally see this as an installation at one of the big galleries over here...
