Quick and Quiet
Liner Notes
I moved back in with family recently and I refuse to let them hear me writing songs. I haven't even told them that I'm doing FAWM because I'm afraid they'd say it's a waste of time. And I definitely don't want to share my lyrics with them. So I have to wait until they both go out, which isn't often, and it results in frantic self-skirmishes.
The piano at the end gets messy but I didn't want to risk another take. They could be home at any minute.
Lyrics
gotta be quick, gotta be quiet don't want anyone to hear gotta be quick, gotta be quiet before anyone comes near
cover your mouth, stay safe and silent don't you dare to take a breath gotta be quick, gotta be quiet lest it ends in your own death
and I won't make a sound when anyone's around cause I won't let them see the truth inside of me don't ever let them see don't ever let them see you cry
gotta be quick, gotta be quiet think I'm running out of time gotta be quick, gotta be quiet lest they see into your mind
lower your voice, don't let them hear you put your sadness on the shelf take a step back, dont' let them near you keep your sorrows to yourself
and I won't make a sound when anyone's around cause I won't let them see the truth inside of me don't ever let them see you cry
There’s this hiding out intensity right away in that piano and then that voice reasserts that pressure. I notice sometimes how much creativity can blossom inside tight constraints. That seems so true here. I first heard “don’t ever let them see you cry” as “don’t ever let them see your crime”. This feels like it could be the statement song for the main character in a musical about a young adult who is misunderstood by family but creates in secret and makes such beautiful things and eventually finds the affirmation that had been missing. Wow.
