Liner Notes

There was a point in my youth when I felt like I had everything figured out and knew everything worth knowing. Oh how wrong I was. This song is about growing older, gaining perspective and looking back at your own past naivety. And bit of a realization that one might be a little stuck in their ways. Includes a Leonard Cohen reference.

Musically there's a lot of chord extensions and stacking of different chords together going on.

Lyrics

every day has felt the same felt more or less the same how come suddenly it appears everything has changed? someone with the set of rules has played us for fools

there used to be a place nearby where grasshoppers used to live now it's a swarm of locusts that have taken over, i think there used to be a lot of things now you never hear grasshoppers sing

does your body ache in the places where you used to play? do you often get the urge to kneel down and pray?

do you miss the time when everything was certain? do you miss the time of sharper contrast when you thought you had seen it all?

when the world was made of ones and zeroes cast with villains and heroes

do you feel the words they use are all misplaced and wrong? do you feel the drugs they take don't work right and are too strong?

does your body ache in the places where you used to play? do you often get the urge to kneel down and pray?

but you're afraid it'll hurt your knees

What a deliciously dark song. Proggy goodness that's so natural and effortless it took me until the bridge to realise it was in seven time. Grasshoppers to locusts; yeah, that's a progression that feels familiar. And as someone with rheumatoid arthritis, I have to say that those lines "does your body ache / in the places where you used to play?" really hit home...

Thanks for enabling downloads on this one. It's a keeper.

I love this weird signatures and harmonies. Really works with the uneasiness of the lyrics

On top of the great song the drum pattern is fantastic! I really think that the approach taken this year is the right one.

Beautifully arranged, love the swirling dreamy vibe towards the end. Very clever unique lyrics. Really enjoyed it.

There's a kind of unsettledness to this in the rhythms that suits the subject matter as well. It's also a bit dreamy and contemplative, with a touch of mature and azziness, which, again, all fit the theme. This feels like a mature song, filled with hard-acquired experience and wisdom, and one where the listener really wants to engage with the lyrics. Gorgeous and lush production as well.

I feel these lyrics in my soul. I like how the lyrics start right off the bat, it caught me off guard in a good way. Love the layered vocals and the subtle strings.

I really like this-- the vibe of the whole song, the various layers, and how your voice fits on top of it all. Definitely puts me in mind of Radiohead with those arpeggios...that's meant as a compliment. Really enjoyable listen!
