Liner Notes

This song is based on a recent trip to the Old Idaho Penitentiary. There was an amazing view at one spot, and I had to write something about it.

Lyrics

Through the ruins of a dining hall Skeleton bars, battered stones A solitary cross stood on a hill

Stretching up to the sky East and west, left and right Monument of death and life

Dazzling white, against blue skies Full of enigmatic memories

For some, the sight summoned hate For others, a promise of hope and grace For everybody else, it was just there

Then a breeze turned me around Icy prison buildings surround Thorny bushes stood exposed to the air

Sunlight shone on cells and stones I shed a tear for all the confined and alone

But soon, I was arrested with a quiet joy For my brothers and sisters lost & found

Through the ruins of a dining hall Skeleton bars, battered stones A solitary cross stood on a hill

The downward turn of the melody underlines the somber mood in the scene you set. I appreciated how you acknowledged the cross could mean a number of different things to people who saw it in their sightline.

I really like how the song's momentum builds and builds, till it feels just on the verge of collapsing into chaos. It really drew me in, and sent me back to listen to it several times in a row.
