This was inspired by a short prayer from the Iona Community, an ecumenical group on the Isle of Iona (located in the Inner Hebrides on the western coast of Scotland). I was fortunate to be able to spend a week there this past year with a group of like-minded folks from various parts of the world. We stayed in a restored 13th century abbey, ate together, worshipped together, prayed together, and deepened our walk with God and each other. Writing this song brought me much comfort today (my birthday, as it happens), as the chaos continues to whirl around us. I hope you will find it comforting, too.

Lyrics

In work, in rest, in worship God is with us

Whether gathered here, or scattered God is with us

In joyful times, in trying times In beginning times, and dying times In times we’d rather run away and hide

From dawn til dusk, from dusk til dawn God is with us

From growing up to growing old God is with us

From believing times, and doubting times In faithful times, and failing times In all the times that make up all our lives

Romans 8:38-39

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love, neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries for tomorrow - not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

…indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord."

From now and til forever God is with us

This is absolutely beautiful -a wonderfully supportive and affirming song of God’s love. The music flows so gorgeously and the spoken word takes me to the pew and the responsorial hymnn… lovely start to a Sunday morning!

The juxtaposition of situations and realities works really well with the underlying refrain of grounding truth. I think you’ve captured the essence of our hope: not just an intervening hand in trouble, but a constant unchanging presence. I especially like the recitation. You have a voice for radio!
