Bars (Mick and Me)
by @robheron1
Liner Notes
YOU are so lucky! This is the first song of my BARS trilogy. This one is about the bars (hurdles, expectations) we set for ourselves that we don't meet and cause us to be unhappy. Less serious than it sounds. The next one will be about the Bars that imprison us. The final one is about drinking Bars.
Lyrics
Mick says he’s got no Satisfaction, he must expect a lot Even though he says he’s got No Expectations You’d think he’d be quite satisfied with all the stuff he’s got But he never quite achieves his aspirations
He needs to set a much lower bar You think someone that smart would know Then he’d be a happy rock star Set that bar way down low
It’s like when your on the running team and the coach says your an ace Everybody thinks you’ll win the cup Things don’t quite go your way. You get second place Hurts so bad you lie there and throw up
Even though you beat ten other guys you got no happiness All that work and now you failed so bad You forgot the rule, that leads us on to bliss Now you just depressed and sad
You need to set a much lower bar Somewhere it won’t get in the way Look how you come so far Don’t let that bar wreck your day

There are people who are never satisfied! Though I'll give him a break on "Satisfaction" because we were all young and hungry once. I love the vocal delivery and gentle guitar. First place for this, and I'll be on the lookout for the remainder of the BARS trilogy.
That opening stanza is Ace! Clever song about managing expectations. Great grounding reminder, and I'm really enjoying the calming vocal delivery.
I like what you did with Mick and never satisfied. You met the bar here for sure.
+1 for FAWM trilogies! in recent years i’ve found a groove doing multiple mini-concept EPs. enough of a framework to inspire and motivate multiple songs, but a "low enough bar” (so to speak) to not be overwhelming.
but your song! beautiful and thoughtful. although i’d argue that the line “Somewhere it won’t get in the way” is the most important thing, regardless how high or low it is!
Wow! A beautiful comment from @burr. I'm gonna frame it. FAWM means so much to me every year. Thanks so much. Guess I better wrap this trilogy!
Love the twist of song titles into life advices. You can't always get what you want, you know?
Nice use of some Rolling Stones song titles. Good vocal and guitar sound. This song has a lot of wisdom.
You can also do a song about the bars of music you can sing -- see Jason Isbell's "Bury Me" for a bunch of "bar" puns: https://genius.com/Jason-isbell-bury-me-lyrics .
And apparently David Bowie did set the bar low enough, as evidenced in this famous clip: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_N4IpWzfy1E
Thanks for the comment Eric and really on point with the Bowie clip. Ha! But I'm not going to listen to Isbell until my trilogy is done...Love that guy but afraid something might get stuck in my head!
This carries so much of a bar vibe, it's fantastic! I could just continue listen to this story ... really intrigued now to hear the other two in the trilogy!
Oooh I love the bars theme, and the specific application in this song. (It's especially relevant for thinking about how to approach FAWM...) Self-imposed theme challenges are great! I gave myself the challenge to write a trilogy of honky-tonk songs about birds last year and decided to do it again this year. Really helps to give some direction in February. Looking forward to listening to the other two!
