I didn’t have time to finish the skirmish during my work day, but it did inspire those song directly.

I’m in the SCA, which means I get to live battlefield heroics and medieval magic, and get to hear some amazing inspiring people get to say some badass things. So, this is a tribute to four amazing women, who have been quoted saying the things listed in the verses (edited for songification). Some of these lines are over a decade old, and I wasn’t involved at the time to hear them, but….if we keep telling folks about them, they’re legends now.

You stood within a wooded glade, Blinded by the sun Your forces gathered round you Before battle’s begun

“We walk on hallowed ground now, Trust vic’try here today, The woods have long been church to us For this is where we prey”

You might not remember, The words you cried aloud Your army, your sworn people, We still hear them

The field was primed for battle Grass baking in the heat We all stood donning armor Refusing our defeat

“Our skill and arms will win today Their strength we will resist For tygers stalk the battlefield And dragons don’t exist”

You might not think it relevant The words you said that day But we, your fellow fighters We still hear them

We rushed into the combat zone The cannon echo gone Pushing past the doorway Into defending throngs

“We must push past these fighters, To hear victory ring Move forward now, and die most brave Your life means not a thing”

Your wisdom carries forward Past the details of the day As we, your friends and comrades, We still hear them

Come gather round the dais tall Before you lift your sword Take your tabard, tie it tight And listen to these words

“We fight for all and each of you We trained both hard and strong Forsake the ones who are not here Because we war as one”

You didn’t know when songs were sung At first, what it would mean But we, your raptured audience Still hear you

The making of a legend In history or hall Begins when stories journey forth To keep inspiring all

So pull the past into the light Repeat the words aloud For we keep myths so bright alive And hope to make them proud

They walk among us, those I quote The heroes in my tale We’ll become like them one day The legend, it won’t fail
