#folkrock (maybe?) #girlwithukulele #fuc

Sometimes a song makes my life difficult in FAWM; this was one of those. My plan was to write one about the Netherlands vampire #LARP that I joined upon my arrival - and I did - but it took on a #dark life of its own.

This particular group has made me feel so welcome here; I am so grateful for what they did to take in a fellow LARPer in need of a #fantasy home.

I think it's in melodic Am (with some F major chords for some reason), with a chorus that breaks into A major somehow, and a bridge that feels more C major. Leads to some awkward transitions, but that's what the music wanted.

My character is named Meadow, and she brings her bowlback #ukulele to each gathering - sometimes even getting to entertain them all with the permission of the Prince (the dark star mentioned in the lyrics of this song). Out in the garden, she often plays songs about beauty and love, to creatures that must struggle against their own darkness to even remember the concepts.

Lyrics

Monsters Jemma Kline

The street is thick with sinners, with the reek of evening flesh, As I’m walking to the party where the drinks are always fresh. Past the gate, see midnight flowers, petals open for the night. From above the moon is watching, feeling horror at the sight.

We are the monsters, beneath your bed. We are the monsters, inside your head. We are the monsters, your darkest dream. We are the monsters; we’ll make you scream.

We are jokers, punks, and divas, fortune tellers, thieves and clowns, We have blood upon our fingers; in our darkness you could drown. The only star that’s left to guide us is the darkest light of all. Will the pillars that he’s chosen be enough to save us all?

We are the monsters, beneath your bed. We are the monsters, inside your head. We are the monsters, your darkest dream. We are the monsters; we’ll make you scream.

But when I sing outside, I feel the wind upon my skin. The notes help me forget the sort of creature that I am. And if my words can capture beauty, wonder, joy, and love, They’ll help us all to stand against the fiends that we’ve become.

We are the monsters, beneath your bed. We are the monsters, inside your head. We are the monsters, your darkest dream. We are the monsters; we’ll make you scream.

As someone who has spent a lot of time examining what makes 'monstrosity' in our collective analysis. I love this. Great chorus, catchy and evocative. Your imagery in that first verse is really awesome.

Ha, brilliant idea, love it!

Okay I love the minor verses that transition to the major chorus! How fun, the minor verses really set the mood but the major chorus lifts it in an unexpected way. Ooh and then this bridge is fun too. I am just here for this ride.
