A tale of, I imagine, how many refuges end up leaving their beloved homelands in an effort to provide for their families. This song provides a prequil to the futile, frustrating conditions that lead up to their fleeing in an attempt to provide.

Lyrics

He Never Had a Prayer

As it all turned out he never had a prayer His future defined in advance But all the same, he took up the dare Choosing to think he had a chance.

His life always bleak, so empty with hunger Yet he knew that so much should be done With hope running thin, south of the border... He swore to clothe and feed everyone.

He had abundant faith in himself and in others He tried to lead them... do what was right He tried to rally mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers... Hoping that they’d join him in this fight.

His future was defined so far in advance All the same, he took up the dare He chose to think he really had a chance. Turns out that he didn’t have a prayer… Turns out he never had a prayer.

I was picturing Grandpa Walton singing this (Will Greer) - ha! (I have no idea what you look like). Sitting onthe porch and singing and telling stories. Love it! The voice is perfect for a story telling.

I love the mandolin call and response - it’s just enough Can you bring the guiro more into focus? I kept wondering what it was - I like it, just choose a rhythm and make it solid.

The mandolin sounds wonderful, it adds some longing and distant sadness. Your vocals carry power that comes from being restrained, works brilliantly in this song. Sounds like some good old western.
