Lyrics

SO THAT'S THE WAY LOVE WORKS

Words & Music By Jerry Pettit Facebook.com/JerryPettitMusic

We were fire and silk in the early days Thought we'd mapped the stars, knew all the ways But winter came with its quiet cold Found us strangers in a house we called our own

I slept facing the wall You took the couch down the hall Wondered if we'd lost the thread Or just needed different words instead

CHORUS: SO THAT'S THE WAY LOVE WORKS— It ebbs and flows like tides Burns down to embers, then it sparks Through seasons we can't fight It's not the arrow's flight But the bow that bends and holds SO THAT'S THE WAY LOVE WORKS— A story that unfolds

Found you crying in the garden after dark Said you couldn't see me through the questions in your heart I said, "I'm right here, though I've been far away Maybe we're not broken, maybe we're just clay"

Shaped by hands that sometimes shake Learning what it means to break And still choose the mending Still believe in new beginning

BRIDGE: Twenty years of "I'm sorry" and "come back to bed" Of silence that cuts and the things we should have said Of ordinary Tuesdays and extraordinary grace Of choosing you again in this ever-changing place

Now I know love's not a destination reached It's the daily practice, it's what we teach Each other in the trying, in the staying when it's hard In the laughter lines and battle scars

CHORUS: SO THAT'S THE WAY LOVE WORKS— It ebbs and flows like tides Burns down to embers, then it sparks Through seasons we can't fight It's not the arrow's flight But the bow that bends and holds SO THAT'S THE WAY LOVE WORKS— A story still being told...

You've painted a very clear picture how the couple in the story have to work to keep love alive. You've created a strong melody and arrangement to carry the story, too. Nice one, Jerry!

Wow, it does ebb and flow for sure. So many wonderful lines in here. "The bow that bends and holds" "a story that unfolds" and so many more. Your vocals and arrangement really bring it all home. I really like it.

Sounds really good - pro production value, I like the stereo panning a lot. Love your vocal. Great lyric, very emotional to me as I'm going through some difficulties in the love area at the moment.

Beautiful and meaningful song. You clearly do know how love works:) Gorgeous vocals and playing. Very emotionally engaging song.

Thank you for your lovely comment on my skirmish piece. "Shmeldavin" is a made-up words for week 1 challenge given as a skirmish prompt 😀

Got a chuckle out of your Liner Notes: "As if I really knew how love worked..." So nice to have you back here. There's a lot of wisdom in this song!

Ah, you clearly do know a little bit about how it works! The lines “It's not the arrow's flight / But the bow that bends and holds” are amazing. Great tune, Jerry!

Others have said it, you have a mini novel here :) I'm really glad you post lyrics (not everyone does) – I think I mentioned it in an earlier year, but the vocal tuning you do makes my ears feel weird, and I find it difficult to focus on what you're saying. But I get that contemporary pop listeners have an expectation. You definitely hit the mark with the easy-listening pop vibe you like.

I'm exhausted living through this couple's relationship - lol! You filled in the blanks to my song. I, too, agree with Chip about your vocals Matt wondering how you write such extensive lyrics. Wow! But one of my favorite novelists was a former lawyer. :)

I love your vocal - perfect for these words. Interesting, cool chord changes too. After 28 years of marriage, I sure appreciate songs about how love is the long haul.

Enamored once again with your lyrics. I wonder how you write so many in a song? Care to share? Are you also a writer? I mean, I know you're a songwriter. 😊 Beautiful backing track!

I have always wanted to be a novel writer and might still do that. I was a lawyer in my younger years and that involves a LOT of writing. Always been a big reader too.

Very good. There's time for all of that if you want. 👍

Really interesting recording. Kept me on my toes the whole time. Nice sounds as well. Lyrics are very well done, tells a great story.

nice job with the irregular meters..keeps the ears on their toes. i also like the rush of the lyrics. i would say they were breathless, but you are never out of breath.

Cool interplay between the guitars in left and right channels. Your vocals sound really nice here. Your melodies are unconventional in a very cool way. Could not predict where it was gonna go. Always a good thing! Love not being a destination but daily practice is a great line and rings very true!
