09: On the Borderlands
Liner Notes
Fired up Borderlands for my ninth track of FAWM 2026. A live improvisation showcasing Borderlands’ excellent granular synthesis.

Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed and appreciated the dip into granular!
Admiring the synth textures. For me granular synthesis has been a riddle, and you're creating something that would fit into a flashback video game scene.
Thanks Nadine. I know granular synthesis can be hard to grasp. Maybe this helps. Think of a patio with all sorts of different things of different materials that make different sounds when struck by raindrops. In this case the waveforms/samples are the surfaces and the moving parts (clouds in synthesis terminology) on the screen are the raindrops. By covering or uncovering the surfaces the sounds start and stop which what I am doing when I move the “clouds” over the samples. In Borderlands you can resize, stretch or layer as many samples as you like.
Oohh this is powerwashing my brain in the best way. So lovely and twinkly! It's so cool to watch you put it all together, that software looks so interesting. Really great textures!
Cheers! Borderlands is highly configurable. You can automate a bunch of parameters like filter, direction of the grains etc. I’m doing the very basic in this track. Mostly cause I haven’t used it for a while and forgot how.
generally pleased. tip of the chapeau to you milord! chomp chomp chompin on this ear candy like homer simpson eating donuts while floating through space that time. this was a sonic journey that rubbed my brain quite pleasantly.
Very visual and vivid description. You’re making me smile with pride as I read your comments and share them with my wife. Did this one on the plane and am now parked looking at mountains waiting for our next flight.
Beautiful textures. It's like a trip through the remnants of someone's half-forgotten nostalgic memories. Granular synthesis really shines with this kind of brain tickling sound exploration.
