Avattujen hautojen takaa (From Behind the Open Graves)
by @emplate
Liner Notes
At first I meant to make a pure post-punk track out of this, but as tends to happen with me, some black metal guitars found their way into the mix during the latter half of the song... But didn't growl this time and rather used some post-punk style shouting.
Lyrics
Talven selkä taittuu Huutona yön tuulissa Avattujen hautojen takaa Varjot kurkistaa
Niiden katse palaa Taivaankanteen kiinni Kirjoittaa tulen ajan Uudestaan Ja uudestaan Ja uudestaan
Kouriintuntuvaan pelkoon Tienoot kääritään Tulipatsaat nousee Hamuavat historiaa
Jäljet painuu hiekkaan Kadotuksen matkalla Tienhaaran päässä Silmät sidotaan kankaalla
Translation:
Winter's back breaks As a cry in the night's winds From behind the open graves The shadows peek
Their gaze burns To the firmament Writes the time of fire Again And again And again
The landscape is wrapped To the palpable fear Statues of fire rise They reach for history
Footprints sink into the sand On the road to extinction At the crossroads The eyes are blindfolded with a cloth

Thank you, my friend! Yes, although I kind of feel I have a wide taste in music, it seems I tend to always gravitate towards the dark stuff. I've never enjoyed cheery, happy art that much, although of course I can appreciate from a clinical viewpoint if its well done.
Also, I'm so glad you enjoyed Musta Paraati! And you are definitely right, I also feel they have some Killing Joke in their sound. Post-punk and black metal actually carry a lot of same melodic language to me. They're both cold and dark genres. Killing Joke's "Hosannas from the Basements of Hell" has to be one of the most apocalyptic albums I know. It sounds like literal Hell.
i used google translate to try and follow along the lyrics, and the imagery does seem to match the dark musical aesthetics. i dig the overall vibe! 🧛 and the crunchy outro (is that the “black metal guitar” bit? still building my metal vocabulary, i guess… 😅 )
Thank you! This reminded me, I meant to post a translation of the lyrics, but haven't gotten around doing so yet. We'll see if I'll remember it at some point... And yeah, the "black metal guitars" are the ones introduced around after the halfway point. They usually are trebly and have a high amount of distortion, sounding like a bee's nest :D
I love listening to songs in languages I'm not familiar with. I can just enjoy the music and the delivery of the lyrics. My friend used to open every gig with a song other than English (her native tongue), immediately putting the crowd into an odd position of bewilderment, wondering if the whole gig was going to be like that, but also letting them enjoy the music without lyrical judgements. Anyways, Great random song this morning.
Cheers! I feel my mother tongue fits very well for this kind of style.
Oh yes this really went into the post punk / dark wave direction. Never heard this in Finnish and I think it hits even harder than English or German. Give me all the distrotion!
Thank you! Finland actually has had a great post-punk scene ever since the 80s! I don't remember if I've recommended you this band before, but if you're interested, Musta Paraati as the absolute Finnish legends would be a great starting point. They're "Peilitalossa" album is an absolute classic, greatest Finnish post-punk record ever made. If you want to get a quick idea, as a single track recommendation off it I'd say check out "Metalliset kasvot":
Thank you Ill check out!
Very cool track. I didn't expect the very 80s electro drums for it, but that really works. Nice to hear something besides the growls too! Keep em coming!
Cheers! I feel that 80s kind of drum machine works in a post-punk context quite well!
Great song, super cool break, that super thin texture breaking up the sonic wall of distortion was excellent. I would love to know the meaning. I'm sure the prosody is on point
Thank you for the comment! I'll try to provide a translation at some point, although some words might be a bit difficult to translate. And the lyrics itself are quite poetic and full of metaphors, as that's how I usually like them, so even a translation might not open up everything, heh. The theme is quite apocalyptic, I'd say, and about the things leading us towards the demise, but also about things that will last after us. But, then again, I often would like people to make their own interpretations, so I try to refrain from explaining too much :)
i deeply deeply appreciate the way you can summon darkness from many, many places :::: grindcore, black metal, post-punk, darkwave... it's quite something, to be able to catch so many shadows in a single mirror.
{{also, i liked the "Metalliset kasvot" song you linked. it sounded a bit killing joke - with the heavy tribal drums - until it peeled away and did it's own synth-heavy thing}}
