#pop

The majority of these songs I'm releasing this month originated from a 4-day vacation in mid-December where my partner and our kittens left for a hotel and I manically wrote as much music as I could, knowing full well that I would not have the time this February to get everything I needed done. I barely slept, I don't really remember the process, but it happened, and twelve instrumentals came out of it. Between then and now I wrote the lyrics and recorded whenever I had the time.

This is not one of those songs. To pull the curtain back a bit, I had settled on writing, recording and releasing 14 new songs, plus 3 old songs that I felt belonged on (and honestly kinda created) this project; an album about love and longing and being semi-sorta catchy so my partner can actually listen to my stuff instead of going "I mean it's cool but does it need to be 8 minutes long?".

Anyways, pretty quickly I realized that I was running into themes and call-backs and things that made my brain itch, and this song was born. It will make sense by the end why this song exists and is here (or it won't because we as the creator are the ones who give the most shits!). For other reasons (mainly my obsession with uneven numbers and needing things to be symmetrical) I ended up adding 3 more songs alongside this, all written near the tail end of January and recorded this month.

The majority of this track was done with MIDI in Mixcraft. No real particular reason for it, I just found a loop I liked and added everything around it, though there is a real piano tucked in there with a flanger so I guess I'm not entirely a fraud.

I wanted to make a catchy track that also exposes a lot of the shitty teenager I used to be, the one who took his sweet time to get it together. A weird little tidbit is that I wanted to follow a twelve-bar blues formula for the verses without it being blues-y, and...well I dunno if I succeeded, but it's there.

Hope you enjoy!

Lyrics

Verse 1: He thought self-talk Meant going on About whatever

The newest Thought was 'fore it left His mind forever.

He thought That people cared, Well, They don't give a fuck. Just like him.

He played the blues, Paid some dues, Loser stumbling Up the ladder.

What goes down, Must come up.

Verse 2: He got real Quiet-like and then Said some things Pretending

That it would Go down better Being Self-deprecating.

A self-inflicted wound Doesn't require Any applause. In fact, opposite.

If this is true, And you knew, How come you Never got better?

It's not like you, Out of the blue, Started acting Like it mattered.

Say it with me: "What goes down, Must come up. What goes down, Must come up."

Chorus: The funny thing About love is that I thought it was dead. I cut it off, cut it off, Cut it off at the head.

They say that Brevity is key To the soul of wit, So cut it off, cut it off Before it even begins.

Cut it off.

i agree with @texmachine_mk2021, the multi-tracked vocals here sound great - did you change your mic and/or recording process? things are sitting together really nicely here. bravo!!

This is funky!!! The 12 bar blues is perfect here, super creative use! The synth sounds are sooo yummy. I love the delivery on “fuck, just like him” so much! Phenomenal backing vocals as always, awesome energy. This one is gonna be stuck in my head my head for awhile!

Wow, very cool. Reminds me a bit of early Beck. When I first read the lyrics I couldn't quite hear in my head what the song might be. Your music pulls the lyrics into a cohesive, funky, gritty whole.

So much going on here and it is all catching my attention. Great melodic lines and love the funky electronic tones. Love the multi-tracked vocals.
