My gym rarely plays anything interesting, but a few weeks back I heard this cool track and had to Shazam it—"Witch Doctor" by a British group called Crazy P. I added it to my inspiration playlist.

This is the result. I've been working to get better at house and dance songs the past few years. It's a skill I never developed, and I think this is my best attempt so far. Kept it simple—no elaborate risers or breakdowns.

The main riff sits on D and I wasn't sure where to take it. Then I remembered what my piano teacher said: "When in doubt, tritone."

Lyrically, the inspiration came from a "wake up" vocal sample I got from Logic. I've been adding vocal samples to my tracks this year and I like what they add—gives the music a focal point while it builds.
